Available in 16- and 32-channel versions, the new Origin Evo consoles feature everything you know and love about the original Origin desks: classic in-line architecture, versatile preamps, and signature E Series EQ.
But they also introduce several key updates, including highly requested features like E Series channel dynamics, a new low-pass filter and updated high-pass filter, and an improved frame that makes it easier to incorporate your favorite gear.
Let’s take a closer look at the new features of the Origin Evo consoles.
Origin Evo channel strips bring the brand’s legendary E Series dynamics to every channel, putting one of the defining elements of the classic ’80s SSL sound right at your fingertips.
Faithfully recreated using original-spec circuitry and components, the Origin Evo E Series Dynamics section delivers the authentic 4000 E character, complete with punchy, aggressive compression and ultra-fast gating.
This section also includes a true RMS sidechain detector and an all-discrete gain-reduction stage, just like the Class A VCA chip used in the original console. Plus, each compressor includes a LINK function, feeding the sidechain signal to the adjacent channels, allowing you to connect multiple channels together.
Best of all, flexible controls let you bypass the soft-knee curve, engage fast attack, and select logarithmic or linear release, giving you all of the tools you need to tackle any task while recording or mixing, from leveling a vocal to smashing the drum room mic and everything in between.
The dynamics section isn’t the only part of the Origin channel strip to get an upgrade. The new Origin Evo modules add a 12 dB/octave low-pass filter, in addition to the current 18 dB/octave high-pass filter, giving you even more control over your tone. Plus, both filters can be switched to the dynamics sidechain and used as a noise-gate or de-esser.
Under the hood, the new Origin Evo consoles sport some subtle updates that make a big difference.
In addition to a new Channel Strip, Origin Evo consoles use an updated Origin Mk2 Frame, which features new rack strip space to accommodate even the widest 19" rack units, like the Harrison 500 Series Rack System. The new rack strip uses M5 Threaded rack holes, as opposed to the square caged nut mounting system on the Mk1 frame, to allow for the wider rack units.
The Evo consoles also feature a new front buffer that uses a modular design with textured rubber inserts that slot into an extrusion (just like SSL’s Oracle console), making it easy to swap them out for custom third-party panels.
Another feature of the Mk2 Origin Frame is that it can accommodate a retrofit kit to seamlessly integrate a UF8 DAW controller into the fader tray of the console. This metalwork kit is easy to install right in your own studio, and also allows the Stereo Group faders to be moved to the lower half of the console center section.
If you currently own an Origin console and are interested in upgrading to the new Origin Evo channel strips, Vintage King makes it easy to update your existing console with simple upgrade kits that you can swap out yourself in minutes.
The update process involves returning eight working Origin Channels after receiving the Origin Evo replacements. You’ll need two kits to update a 16-channel console, and four kits to update a 32-channel console.
