For generations, AMS Neve’s consoles have been a cornerstone of professional audio, shaping the sound of countless chart-topping records. Now, the legendary manufacturer is bringing its coveted console dynamics to your desktop with the 88C Dual Desktop Dynamics

The Neve 88C is a studio-grade desktop compressor that captures the essence of the brand’s revered 88R console compression in a compact, portable format. You read that right, authentic Neve compression right on your desktop.

The Neve 88C compressor is in the spotlight in our latest Quick Hits video. Watch below to hear how the 88C sounds on performances by Ben Garrett (Vocals, Electric Piano, Acoustic Guitar), Frankie Orella (Vocals), Kevin Schuck (Bass), Wyatt Marsh (Electric Guitar), Jacob Trunzo (Organ), and Jordan McGee (Drums). Mixed by Addison Sauvan.

These sound sources were captured during a recording session at Vintage King Nashville featuring the Neve 1073OPX with USB/ADAT card, 88M audio interface and 8424 console. For full signal chain information, watch the video below.

Neve 88C Dual Desktop Dynamics

The 88C is a direct descendant of Neve's acclaimed VCA compression legacy, which began in the early 1970s with the brand’s groundbreaking 50 Series consoles. Building on decades of evolution through the legendary VR and 88R series, the 88C delivers the warm, smooth, and musical compression that engineers have trusted for decades.

When it comes to I/O, the 88C is pretty straightforward, with two channels of balanced TRS inputs and outputs on the back, as well as dedicated key inputs for both channels. And while it may seem common at first glance, the USB connector on the back is actually a pretty big deal.

In a world first for professional-grade dynamics processing, the 88C can be powered directly via USB-C from your laptop, making it a truly portable solution for capturing Neve's signature sound wherever inspiration strikes.

Adaptive Attack & Release Settings

At the heart of the 88C is Neve's sophisticated Adaptive Attack technology, a program-dependent system that automatically responds to your audio's dynamics. This intelligent circuitry automatically adjusts attack times based on transient intensity, with faster times for louder peaks and slower times for subtle variations.

The unit's release section is equally intelligent, featuring triple time constant technology that provides program-dependent auto-release behavior. This sophisticated system, combined with Neve's automatic Anti-Breathe technology, prevents unwanted artifacts from sudden level drops.

Plus, the 88C’s feed-forward VCA design offers continuously variable controls, with ratios spanning from gentle 1:1 compression all the way to brick-wall limiting. This flexibility makes the 88C equally capable of subtle dynamic control during tracking or aggressive limiting during mixdown.

New Features

The 88C is more than just a portable version of the 88R console compressor, though. It comes loaded with several thoughtful new features, including comprehensive metering across input, gain reduction, and output stages.

Three additional sidechain filters allow you to fine-tune the compressor's response, preventing unwanted triggering from low frequencies and enabling frequency-conscious compression techniques.

True bypass switching enables instant A/B comparison, while professional balanced TRS connections ensure seamless integration with your existing studio setup. For maximum versatility, each channel can operate independently or be linked via the VCA bus for precise stereo operation.
