When it comes to creating a polished, professional-sounding mix, the final stop on your signal chain is often the most important. A great mix bus processor can add cohesion, depth, and subtle character that helps your work translate across any system. Whether you’re chasing clean, transparent dynamics or rich, analog color, the right processor can elevate a mix from good to great.
For this Hear The Gear session, we put four highly respected mix bus tools through their paces: the Rupert Neve Designs Master Buss Processor, the SSL Fusion, the Tegeler Creme RC, and the Rupert Neve Designs MBT. Each piece offers its own approach to tone shaping, compression, and stereo enhancement.
Hear The Gear Video: Mix Bus Processors
During a session at the Vintage King Nashville Showroom, mixing engineer Addison Sauvan put these four processors head-to-head on two different mixes so you can hear exactly how each shapes the sound. Watch our Hear The Gear videos below to compare their tone, feel, and stereo presentation, and decide which one deserves a spot on your mix bus.
Rupert Neve Designs Portico II Master Buss Processor

Built around the high-voltage, Class-A signal paths from the legendary 5088 console, the MBP delivers a mix of surgical control and RND’s signature warmth.
Its dual compressor sections offer both feed-forward and feed-back modes for a modern transparent sound or a vintage-inspired approach. Peak mode and a sidechain high-pass filter make it easy to tame low-end heavy material without dulling the mix, while the Blend control invites parallel compression right on the master bus.
The onboard Stereo Field Editor lets you fine-tune width, depth, and specific frequency bands in the mid or side channels. Combined with Rupert Neve’s custom input and output transformers, the MBP is capable of everything from subtle polish to creative sound-shaping.
SSL Fusion Analog Master Processor

The SSL Fusion brings classic British analog mojo into modern hybrid studios. It's all-analog signal path hosts five distinct tone-shaping tools that can be used individually or combined for maximum impact on your mix bus or stems.
The Violet EQ offers simple two-band shelving with minimal phase shift, making it perfect for final tonal adjustments. With four selectable frequencies per band, it's equally effective for adding low-end weight or high-end sparkle.
The compressor section uses a high-frequency-focused compressor to smooth out harshness in cymbals and vocals. But, by holding down the "In" button, you can engage full-range LMC mode with wet/dry blend.
Fusion’s Stereo Imager uses analog M/S processing with simple Space and Width controls to enhance stereo separation without losing focus. The non-linear Drive circuit adds gentle warmth or aggressive saturation, while the custom output transformer adds subtle saturation and high-end sheen.
Tegeler Audio Creme RC Bus Compressor/Mastering Equalizer

The Creme RC combines two mix bus essentials: a Pultec-style passive EQ and a VCA bus compressor. Best of all, it comes with a dedicated remote control for instant recall, making it ideal for use on the mix bus or even mastering.
The bus compressor offers smooth, transparent control with ratios as low as 1.5:1 for subtle shaping, plus a sidechain high-pass filter to keep kick and bass from over-triggering the compression.
The EQ section focuses on the classic Pultec trick: a low-end boost for bass definition and a high-end lift for openness and sparkle. You can even choose whether the EQ feeds the compressor or vice versa, giving you flexibility to enhance tone before or after dynamics control.
Rupert Neve Designs MBT Master Bus Transformer

The Rupert Neve Designs MBT Master Bus Transformer distills decades of analog expertise into a versatile mix bus processor. Built around Class A, transformer-coupled signal paths, the MBT offers a streamlined approach to mix bus processing while maintaining the sonic signature that made Rupert Neve’s consoles legendary.
The high-pass filter and shelf EQ section provides surgical precision for tone shaping, making it easy to fine-tune your mix. The optical Color Comp offers a choice of 2:1 or 5:1 ratios, delivering smooth, musical leveling.
Building on Rupert Neve’s legendary Silk Blue and Silk Red circuits, the Super Silk mode introduces odd-order harmonics and Zener Drive for rich, complex saturation that adds warmth, depth, and character.
Finally, the M/S-based Width control enhances stereo spread while preserving low-end clarity, thanks to its own variable high-pass filter ranging from 50Hz to 800Hz.
