Mystery Magicians founder and head engineer Arash Mafi and co-founder and CAD engineer Avery Van Der Steur have built an incredible lineup of tube-based gear inspired by classic console designs. It all started with the heavy-duty M808A dual-channel preamp, and the duo has continued to expand on those same design principles ever since.
The Mystery Magicians family now includes a single-channel version of the M808A, along with the LBDI and RBDI preamp/DIs. Both are fully tube-based, but each takes a different form factor; the LBDI is housed in a lunchbox-style enclosure, while the RBDI is a 1U rackmount unit. Rounding out the lineup is the M808AP Dual Channel Preamp Patch Bay, a 1U system that gives you greater control over the I/O of the dual-channel M808A.
Ever since the LBDI and RBDI were announced earlier this year, we've been wanting to assemble the whole Mystery Magicians lineup and put it to work on a session. In our new Fresh Listen video, we're heading to the Scramble Shack to record a full track with Mike Leslie (Vocals) and Bryan Reilly (Bass, Drums, Electric Guitar).
The Mystery Magicians M808A is a dual-channel tube preamp inspired by the sound and design philosophy of classic British consoles. Each channel offers up to 80 dB of gain, Class A operation, custom hand-wound input and output transformers, and switchable Pentode and Triode modes for exploring different levels of gain, character, and harmonic content. The M808A also features mic, line, and instrument inputs, insert points, selectable high- and low-pass filters, and a THD saturation indicator that lets you see when the input tube is being pushed.
For easier access to the M808A’s I/O, Mystery Magicians also offers the M808APB front-panel patch bay. The 1U unit brings both channels’ mic, line, DI, send, return, and line outputs to the front of the rack, making it easier to integrate the M808A into your studio's workflow.
The single-channel M808A brings the same core design and sonic character of the dual-channel version to a more compact format. It retains the switchable Pentode/Triode operation, Class A signal path, hand-wound transformers, saturation indicator, filters, and flexible mic, line, instrument, and insert connectivity, making it an ideal option for anyone who wants the M808A sound without needing two channels.
Built for tracking, reamping, and tone shaping, the RBDI is a fully tube-based, Class A direct box and instrument preamp with plenty of flexibility on tap. Its 12AU7 tube circuit offers up to 53 dB of gain, with selectable high and low-gain modes, separate input and output gain controls, and a bypassable three-band tube EQ. The 1U rackmount unit also features a dedicated reamp input, front-panel source switching, thru output, phase reverse, ground lift, and a -20 dB output pad.
Sharing the same all-tube Class A circuit as the RBDI, the LBDI delivers the same tracking, tone-shaping, and reamping capabilities in a portable lunchbox-style chassis. With its built-in handle and compact footprint, it’s especially well suited for players who want the flexibility of the RBDI in a format that can move easily between the studio, stage, and amp room.
