The Mystery Magicians M808A is an original two-channel tube preamplifier inspired by the lauded and sought-after sounds of 1960s British tube consoles. Meticulously crafted to elevate your microphone, instrument, or line level signals, the M808A boasts a clean and rich output, infusing your sound with a vintage-tinged warmth and harmonically rich tone that’s all its own.
The M808A offers up to 80 dB of gain and a wide range of tone and harmonic palettes thanks to its innovative Pentode/Triode mode operation. The vintage-style Filter, Gain, and Attenuate knobs offer the responsiveness and flexibility of modern units. A cutting-edge Saturation (THD) detecting circuit shows the available headroom in real-time via the front-panel pilot light, allowing you to clean up your signal on the fly or dial in the perfect tube-saturated sound. You can also sculpt your sound further using the four lossless active tube high and low-pass filters.
At the heart of the M808A's massive sound is its Class A single-ended operation and hand-wound audio transformers, which give the unit the sound and feel of a vintage preamp, despite not being based on any specific unit. Along with its vintage-style components, the M808A boasts plenty of innovative features, including switchable line voltages for global usability, a fully regulated power supply for reliability, and MuMetal shielding on all audio transformers for the quietest operation.
Mics aren’t the only things that can benefit from the M808A’s warmth and heft. The Direct/Instrument inputs make DI recording a breeze, and the Line In/Out and Send/Return inputs let you seamlessly integrate the M808A with your patch bay and favorite outboard gear.
The M808A is a true work of art. Designed from the ground up and hand-built in Los Angeles, CA with meticulous attention to detail, the M808A Valve Preamplifier from Mystery Magicians is built to last for years to come. Check it out today to experience the magic for yourself.
I acquired a Mystery Magicians M808A preamp and am really stunned by the lush tone it offers. The controls on the front panel allow so many different characteristics from very clean to fully saturated tubesound and saturated transformer mojo. Built like a tank, I rely on the 808 to offer gorgeous cello tone, seductive singing voice pick up, authoritative piano recordings, and Lush brass ensemble sounds. The builders obviously have a passion for fine equipment and this Golden Age sound from LA should be grabbed right now, today, by any discerning engineer and producer. Endorsed.
The M808A preamplifier has been an incredible addition to my studio. My clients really enjoy the DI portion of this unit. Instruments break up quite nicely with the right amount of warm distortion from the tubes. Can't wait for what's to come from Mystery Magicians!
When building out a new studio this year, I was looking for a killer 2 channel preamp that I could use for EVERYTHING. Synths, Vocals, Drums, Piano etc. It was also important to me that it could handle all kinds of microphones including ribbons. The guys at VK recommended this new preamp to me and it was the best advice I've taken so far! Combining the warmth of the tubes and the width and fidelity of the unit makes it the clear winner for every single source I throw at it. Whether its cranking up the gain for the Coles 4038's on quiet sources like piano, or kissing the filters with a huge polysynth, the M808 is always the best option at my disposal. One more thing I want to talk about when it comes to this preamp. Its always a bit scary to spend your money with a brand new company. But I've never been so happy I did. I was in a dire panic situation when I moved into my new space and immediately encountered ground loop noise all over the place. Not knowing where to turn, I emailed Mystery Magicians for some help and said "I dont think there is anything wrong with the preamp, but I'm having some trouble and was hoping you had some advice". I got a phone call 5 minutes later, and within an hour Arash was over at my studio helping me diagnose the problem. When he narrowed it down to an issue with a patchbay of mine, he offered to take it home with him and not only fix it but also build me a custom grounding cable that would solve my problem. After dropping it back off the next day and curing my ground loops, I have pristine sound running through all my gear, and with the M808 as the front end for everything I've never been happier! These guys not only make an INCREDIBLE product, but offer a kindness and support that's hard to come by with most companies. They've more than earned my business, and they should earn yours as well! I cant wait to see what these guys do in the future!
I've added this preamp to my collection recently and have to say it's one of the coolest preamps I own. I use this preamp with several matched mics for stereo piano and overhead drums and the channel matching on the M808A is incredible. The pentode/triode option gives you lots of gain and color options, and I use the filters all the time to sonically tame stuff on the fly. The build quality is excellent, and I recommend this unique preamp to anyone In the market for one.
The best gear advice always comes from those who use it the most. That's where you come in!
