From the early 4000 Series consoles to the legendary SL 9000 J and the modern Duality, Solid State Logic knows a thing or two about quality channel strips. As of late, the brand has started offering rackmountable channel strips that mix and match modules from different desks, like the Revival 4000, which combines circuits from the brand’s classic 4000 B and E Series consoles.
Building on that same format, the new Super 9000 is an all-in-one analog channel strip inspired by the SL 9000 console, featuring the brand’s signature SuperAnalogue preamps, Variable Harmonic Drive technology, G-Series and E-Series EQs, and a versatile dynamics section.
Vintage King put the SSL Super 9000 channel strip to the test during a session at Scramble Shack, featuring performances by Olivia Dear (vocals), Bob Mervak (organ, piano, synth), Dustin McLaughlin (electric guitar), and Bryan Reilly (acoustic guitar, bass, drums). From Abbey Road in London to the Record Plant in LA to Power Station in New York, the SSL 9000 was used in top studios around the world during the late 90s and early 2000s, and quickly became an industry standard for mixing hip-hop, R&B, pop, and rock records. Now, the Super 9000 brings that same mojo right to your studio rack.
At the heart of the Super 9000 is SSL’s signature SuperAnalogue preamps. First introduced in the SL 9000 J and perfected in the Duality, SuperAnalogue technology delivers transparent sound with super-wide bandwidth, ruler-flat frequency response, and ultra-low distortion.
Paired with the brand’s innovative VHD technology, G-Series ‘Pink Knob’ 292 and E-Series ‘Black Knob’ 242 EQ circuits, and a classic VCA compressor, the Super 9000 has everything you need to capture record-ready vocals and instruments.
Just like on SSL’s flagship Duality console, the Super 9000 lets you choose between two classic preamp flavors. The classic SuperAnalogue preamp delivers crystal-clear sound with plenty of headroom that’s perfect for capturing every detail of a performance.
On the other hand, the modern Variable Harmonic Drive (VHD) preamp lets you dial in the perfect amount of color and character using 2nd order harmonics for rich, valve-like warmth, or 3rd order harmonics for a harder, transistor-style edge. Plus, you can even use the VHD circuit on the Line Inputs to add harmonics to DAW stems or line-level instruments.
No SSL channel strip would be complete without the brand’s signature compressor. Built around the high-performance THAT 2181A VCA chip, the compressor includes a switchable Fast Attack mode and Peak Detect option—a feature first introduced on the SL 9000 console. The Super 9000 also incorporates SSL’s classic Expander/Gate section with new HOLD control for precise dynamic control.
Last but certainly not least, the Super 9000 features a comprehensive EQ section for fine-tuning your sound. By default, the EQ section uses the 292 G-Series ‘Pink Knob’ EQ circuit, which utilizes a variable-Q design for smooth, wide boosts and cuts that tighten as you push harder.
But, with the press of a button, you can switch to the 242 E-Series ‘Black Knob’ EQ circuit, which utilizes a constant-Q design developed in collaboration with Sir George Martin for more surgical control.
For added versatility, the EQ section also features two buttons labelled ‘E Bell/G÷3’ and ‘Gx3/E Bell.’ When in 292 mode, these buttons allow the Low-Mid Frequency to be divided by three and the High-Mid Frequency to be multiplied by three, greatly extending the range of selectable frequencies. In 242 mode, these buttons switch the Low Frequency and High Frequency bands between Bell and Shelving modes.
