For over 60 years, the legendary EMI recording consoles built at Abbey Road Studios have shaped the sound of popular music. From The Beatles to Pink Floyd, these historic desks captured some of the most influential recordings in history. But for decades, these classic EMI designs remained out of reach.
That changed when Chandler Limited partnered with Abbey Road Studios to develop the REDD Mixing System, the first new EMI recording console released in over 50 years. After six years of meticulous development, Chandler Limited has brought the iconic sound of REDD, TG, and RS desks into the modern era with a fully modular system that lets you build your dream console from the ground up.
In this Buyer's Guide, we'll explore everything you need to know about the Chandler Limited REDD Mixing System, but first, let's take a look back at the storied history of EMI console design.
EMI’s console legacy dates all the way back to 1958, with the introduction of the REDD.37, a groundbreaking desk that set new standards for recording quality. Six years later, the REDD.51 arrived, refining the formula with improved circuitry and expanded features. Then in 1968, EMI introduced the TG12345 MKI, a solid-state design that would go on to shape the sound of classic albums for decades to come.
These consoles quickly became fixtures at Abbey Road throughout the early 1960s. The Beatles tracked "Abbey Road" through a TG desk. Pink Floyd crafted "The Dark Side of the Moon" on EMI circuits. Even film scores like "Raiders of the Lost Ark" relied on these consoles to capture their epic sound.
Featuring fully discrete, transformer-balanced tube signal paths and minimal circuitry, these desks delivered a sound that was rich, open, and remarkably three-dimensional. But as the decades passed and technology evolved, these classic desks became harder to maintain and nearly impossible to replace.
Until now, that is. For the first time, the REDD Mixing System unites these historic sounds in one flexible, modern format.
Rather than a single, fixed console, the Chandler Limited REDD Mixing System is a modular, purpose-built approach to analog mixing. At its core, the REDD Mixing System is built from individual cassettes or modules that handle specific functions, including mic preamps, line amplifiers, equalization, and summing.
The REDD Mixing System allows you to design your ideal set-up by combining REDD Tube Input Cassette, TG MKIV Input Cassette, TG Buss Cassette, 12-Channel Expander Cassette, and Control Room Monitoring Cassette modules.
You can configure any combination of these cassettes to create a console that's perfectly suited to your needs, whether you're tracking a band, mixing in the box, or using it as high-end outboard gear.
In addition to custom modular designs, the Chandler Limited REDD Mixing System is also available in a pre-made 16-channel configuration that’s tailor-made for studio workflows.
Best of all, the REDD Mixing System fits into just 12 rack units, making it easy to integrate into modern studio furniture. From compact tracking setups to massive studio installations, this system scales to meet your needs while delivering the legendary EMI sound that shaped generations of hit records.
Thanks to Chandler’s cassette-based architecture, REDD systems can also be configured to match the needs of today’s tracking, mixing, or hybrid workflows. All cassettes feature transformer-balanced inputs and outputs, hand-soldered PCBs, and traditional eyelet wiring, and are 100% hand-wired and hand-assembled in Shell Rock, Iowa.
Let’s take a closer look at the REDD Mixing System cassettes available at Vintage King.
Inspired by the REDD.47 preamps found in classic Abbey Road consoles, the Tube Input cassette delivers classic tube tone with modern flexibility. This all-tube mic pre and EQ features switchable Pop and Classic curves, along with flexible gain controls that range from clean tones to rich saturation. It also includes a vintage-style DI and transformer-based rumble filter for added character.
The TG MKIV Input Cassette lets you build a console with however many preamp/channel inputs you want. This solid-state input cassette combines a Class A TG2-style preamp with a four-band Curve Bender EQ, plus routing, pan, and level consoles.
Much like the TG MKIV Input Cassette, the TG Buss Cassette lets you customize the number of busses on your REDD Mixing System. It’s a solid-state buss cassette with two aux sends, providing four busses and four sends per system. It features extensive gain staging using Coarse Gain, Fine Gain, and output faders, making it easy to dial in transparent mic gain or subtle saturation, just like Chandler outboard mic preamps.
This expander cassette provides twelve Class A TG2-style MKIV amplifiers to expand your channel count. There are twelve transformers per cassette, plus four busses and four sends per channel. Multiple expanders can be combined for large systems or additional returns.
Last, but not least, you’ll need a way to monitor your tracks, which is where the Control Room Monitoring cassette comes in. The Control Room Monitoring Cassette provides monitor selection with up to seven user-configurable sources, plus selectable monitoring for busses, sends, master buss, aux, and external inputs. A discrete op-amp design ensures ultra-clean monitoring, while popular functions like talkback routing, Mono, Dim, Mute, and Phase Reverse make it easy to get the job done during even the most demanding sessions.
