The humble equalizer is one of the most powerful tools in any studio. Whether you’re shaping a vocal, cleaning up a muddy mix, or adding that final bit of polish, the right EQ can make all the difference. But with so many options out there, it can be tough to know where to start, especially when you're working within a budget.
That's why we put together this guide to the best EQs for any budget. Whether you're picking up your first hardware EQ or adding a high-end mastering unit to your rack, there's something here for every studio and every price point. Keep scrolling to find the perfect EQ for your setup.
This price range is the perfect starting point for building out your EQ collection. Here you’ll find classic EQs from legacy brands, innovative new designs, and even a true-blue tube EQ! Bet you didn’t think you’d see one of those at this price point, huh?
Up first, the SSL E-Series EQ MK2 faithfully recreates the four-band EQ from the brand’s iconic SL 4000 E console channel strip, including switchable "Brown-02" and "Black-242" low frequency bands.
The only 500 Series EQ designed by Rupert Neve, the RND 551 combines several of Mr. Neve’s classic EQ designs into one versatile module. The low-frequency band is inspired the 1066, the midrange band is based on the 1073, and the high-frequency band is a hybrid vintage/modern design.
If you’re looking for something a little more out of the ordinary, the Cranborne Audio Carnaby is the world’s first Harmonic EQ. Unlike traditional EQs, Carnaby uses harmonic saturation to boost and cut frequency content, combining analog harmonic saturation with the familiar controls of a conventional EQ.
This tier opens up a few more classic EQs, including coveted designs from API, Neve, and more. All of the EQs in this bracket are 500 Series modules, although most of them are also available in rackmount formats with additional features.
If you want the classic American console sound, you can't go wrong with the API 550A and API 550B. The 550A gives you three bands of API's proprietary proportional Q circuitry, where the bandwidth gets tighter the more you boost or cut, while the 550B offers even more flexibility with four bands and additional frequency options.
On the British side, the Neve 1073LBEQ delivers the three-band EQ section from the iconic 1073 preamp. Plus, the LBEQ features Neve’s innovative Audio Processing Insert design, meaning it integrates seamlessly with the 1073LB preamp for the full channel strip effect.
Finally, the Pultec EQP-500X brings the legendary program equalizer to the 500 Series format. The op-amp is based on the classic API 2520, which delivers a much different sound from the standard vacuum tube models.
Stepping into this price range opens up a lot of new options. While the previous bracket was mostly 500 Series modules, here you'll find a wider variety of formats, including rackmount stereo units, tube-based designs, and even some mastering EQs.
If you're searching for that rich, tube-driven sound, the Gainlab Audio Empress EQ deserves a hard look. Building on the legendary Pultec design with a dedicated midrange band, the Empress is a stereo passive EQ with military-grade tubes and stepped controls.
Need something more surgical? The Maag Audio EQ4M is a stereo mastering EQ with six bands per channel, including the brand’s signature Air Band, which adds a natural, open quality to the top end without sounding harsh or hyped.
And if you need something versatile that you can use on every session, the UnderToneAudio UTEQ500 is a solid choice. Thanks to its innovative Shape Control, which allows you to blend between shelf and peak shapes, the UTEQ500 can recreate the shape and EQ curve of almost any hardware EQ ever made.
This price range is where you'll find some of the most iconic EQ designs ever made. We're talking classic tube EQs, industry-standard mastering EQs, and cutting-edge analog EQs with digital recall and plug-in control.
At the top of the list is the legendary Pultec EQP-1A, an EQ that needs little introduction. Known for its unique ability to boost and attenuate the same frequencies at the same time, it delivers powerful low-end and a silky top-end that’s hard to replicate with solid-state gear.
In the mastering department, the IGS Audio 825EQ is a two-channel tube EQ in a streamlined 3U chassis. It combines stepped Elma controls with UTM transformer balanced inputs and outputs, and three audio transformers per channel, delivering rich, full sound.
Based on the beloved “NetEQ”, designed by the late Barry Porter, the GOLY PG25 Porter Grinder takes things to the next level with redesigned input and output sections, high- and low-pass filters, Q circuits, and more. Plus, GOLY added a dedicated MS section and a master gain control that basically works as a full-frequency band.
Finally, the Dangerous Music BAX EQ is a bit different from the others on this list. Based on the classic Baxandall shelving curve, it adds air and weight with a natural ease that's hard to achieve with a standard parametric EQ.
At this level, you're looking at the absolute best EQs money can buy. We're talking high-end tube EQs, industry-standard mastering EQs, and cutting-edge analog designs with digital controls. These are the tools that top engineers trust with the most important sessions in the world, and every single one of them is worth the investment.
While many of the EQs in this bracket are time-tested classics, the WesAudio ngTubeEQ is a fresh take on the age-old tube EQ design, combining tubes and Carnhill transformers with modern features like digital recall and automation.
Up next is the Manley Massive Passive. This thing is massive in both name and sound. Loaded with two 5751 tubes, four 6922 tubes, and hand-wound inductors, the Massive Passive delivers unparalleled tonal sculpting for tracking, mixing, and mastering.
Designed by the legendary George Massenburg, the GML 8200 is one of the most accurate and transparent EQs ever made. This two-channel, five-band parametric EQ has been a fixture in world-class studios and mastering rooms for decades.
Last but certainly not least, the D.W. Fearn VT-5 is a top-tier choice for just about any sound source. It combines the same Class A tube stages as the brand’s VT-1 and VT-2 microphone preamps with carefully selected components like 1% metal-film resistors, polystyrene and polypropylene capacitors, and custom-made Jensen transformers.
No matter your budget, the right EQ can make a huge difference in your recordings and mixes. From compact 500 Series modules to full-featured mastering EQs, today’s options give you access to both classic analog tone and modern precision.
