TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik’s ELA M 251T large diaphragm tube microphone adds a space age twist to the classic ELA M 251 model with the introduction of the newly developed CK13 capsule. Offering selectable cardioid, omnidirectional and bidirectional polar patterns, just like the ELA M 251E, the ELA M 251T also houses an amplifier circuit that includes a premium NOS (new old stock) ECC801S vacuum tube as well as a Haufe T14/1 output transformer, which is also found in the 251E and the C12.
Historically, CK12 capsules have featured gold-sputtered Mylar diaphragms, but the CK13 diaphragm membrane is made from Alloy 2213, an amalgam of titanium and aluminum that was originally developed for the aerospace industry. Since Alloy 2213 is both more rigid and lighter than gold, this new membrane helps deliver greater detail yet with all the depth for which ELA M 251 microphones have long been renowned.
The rigidity of the Alloy 2213 diaphragm introduces a higher damping factor to the motion of the membrane, thereby providing greater accuracy in the low frequency range. At the same time, the lighter membrane, combined with the CK13 capsule, results in an upper frequency response that has been described as "airy" and "delicate.”
The edge-terminated, dual-backplate CK13 capsule in the ELA M 251T, like the CK12 capsule in the ELA M 251E, offers a choice of cardioid, omnidirectional and bidirectional polar patterns, making it ideal for a wide variety of applications. The amplifier circuit includes a premium NOS (new old stock) ECC801S vacuum tube as well as the Haufe T14/1 output transformer that is also found in the 251E and the C12. To differentiate this modern update of a classic mic model, the 251T features the same historically accurate construction as the 251E but is instead finished in sleek sulfamate nickel plate to reflect the proprietary capsule technology housed within.
