Many successful mixing engineers share one thing in common: They mix with a compressor and EQ in the master channel. The EQ is usually set to subtly boost the bass and treble, while the bus compressor compresses the sound by a couple of dB. This gives the engineer an idea of how the mix will sound after mastering, even still during in the mixing stage. It also helps in finding the right volume balance for individual sounds (especially vocals).
The Tegeler Audio Creme Bus Compressor and Mastering Equalizer puts the very best of both functions into one device. The passive EQ has been reduced down to the most popular applications: Bass boost, to give greater definition to the bass, and treble boost, to give the mix the necessary shine. The boost has been made switchable to enable total recall and to reduce the boost to more appropriate levels for use on the master channel.
The bus compressor has a few additional functions such as a low-pass filter for the side chain and an additional ratio of 1.5:1 for especially subtle compression.
The placement of the EQ and compressor in the mix can also be switched. Similarly, the Crème is suitable for use in mastering as well.
Do you want to softly and inaudibly balance the track or give it a particular rhythmic signature? The Crème’s VCA compressor can do all this. Its characteristic and powerful sound can bring every mix to the next level. The compressor can really work hard, giving your mix a more noticeable open and brilliant sound.
The compression is very harmonic in nature, the sound always remains transparent, and the individual instruments find their own place in the mix. The often lamentable loss of high notes in compression simply doesn’t happen here – rather, the signal sounds like it has already been fed through an exciter.
Bass sounds like a unified whole and refined with lean dynamics. The switchable high-pass filter in the side chain ensures that, when required, even heavy bass sounds don’t lead to pumping.
Passive equalizers with their elaborate circuits with coils and capacitors are still among the most popular sound makers in master compression. The Creme features the filter circuitry from the original Pultec for good reason - no other type of EQ manages to sound as good in almost any matter of setting. Soft and silky highs that deserve the name. A bass boost that gives the mix a solid foundation and thrust, without squashing everything into an indistinct nothingness.
Tegeler took the filter circuitry from the original Pultec and carefully updated it. Unnecessary controls have been replaced by fixed values. Similarly, unnecessary frequencies have been removed from the mix bus.
All controls have been replaced with rotary switches for greater precision. Limiting the range of settings possible to reasonably required values has made these adjustments much more precise. This gives the Crème its accurate stereo tracking features.
The result is an EQ you really have to hear. Hear it only once, and you’ll forever miss its absence. If you’ve never heard it, it’s that EQ that you’ve always been looking for.
I didn’t even know this product existed until I described my needs to my sales rep Cody A from the Nashville division. He immediately knew it would suit my needs and it goes above and beyond what I expected. Since incorporating it in my mix bus I have been able to take off every plug in I was using. The compression and eq are as subtle as I need them to be on the mix bus, but can also get aggressive for parallel bus compression. It’s got a great warmth and I will never mix without it.
Beautiful unit. Amazing sound. Definitely worth the value by far.
The EQ section is unreal, lives on the mix bus and for my budget I couldn't have hoped for more of a game changer. The compressor is a tricky beast, it's incredibly transparent. After a couple months of playing with it on the mix bus there's not a whole lot of wow factor there for me other than it's quite skilled at gluing, and my mixes have gotten better. But it has left me seeking a second stereo compressor that can add some energy and do that special magic thing to the mix. Where I've found the compressor really excels is on vocals, vocal groups, acoustics/groups. It does something really beautiful and unique with acoustic harmonics. Like any hardware youve gotta date it for a while before you really know who they are and what makes them incredibly special and i get the feeling Im only scratching the surface. Overall, this thing is worth every penny!
I’ve had this for a little while now. I’ve used in on many sources and it sounds great. Lives on my two buss currently.
My primary vocal chain, 76 into the 2A, Nice!
There is a choice to have the Pultec EQ before or after the compressor allowing this unit to act like 2 units. The EQ has 2 frequency filters, with the addition of Hi and Low boost knobs to add the extra bottom and top end. It's passive with no Tubes, so it does not color the sound. You will need another EQ along with this unit though most of the time. As a wish, they could add 2 extra filters to the EQ to help overcome the parametric feel though, and give more use to the boost knobs, so you wouldn't need an additional EQ. The compressor adds a very thin and clean harmonic saturation to help glue the accurate and even sounding audio together. Making it sound beefy and polished as a result. - It does not have an input drive knob, so you'll need to drive the unit externally to get extra saturation.
Excellent addition to and already excellent studio.
Very Nice !!
The Tegeler Crème is a beast! It can be be very aggressive if you need it to be and also subtle if need be. Instant warmth and thickness and the eq is sweet, no harshness or unwanted boominess. Couldn’t be happier with this purchase.
1st piece of outboard gear…what can I say. It’s made me a gear addict. That said, I do find this to be pretty utilitarian for SSL VCA style comp and a Pultec-ish style high and low shaping. Pushing it hard doesn’t leave you unsatisfied either.
