The Soyuz SU-013 Small Diaphragm FET Condenser Microphone is the newest member of the Soyuz family. In a break from tradition, the SU-013 is available in both Soyuz signature cream and brass and in black, for applications requiring a less visually conspicuous appearance.
The SU-013 features a carefully designed, low-noise Field Effect Transistor topography and the rich sound of custom in-house created and crafted toroidal transformers.
The SU-013's classic internal transformer design creates a detailed sound that is robust in the lower frequencies, rich in the midrange, and silky smooth in the upper register.

I recently purchased a pair of Soyuz 013 FET (black) to use to do location recordings on a classical guitar. I compared them to a pair of Neumann KM 184's, and found the Soyuz to have a very different character of sound. First, the Soyuz are more interesting, sorry for the generic description, but that is my first impression. The Neumann's sound rather "flat" in comparison - not bad, but just not very interesting. The Soyuz seem to have crisp highs that pop better, giving them a nice sparkle that the Neumann's lack. However, the Soyuz do have a pronounced low end boost that made the recordings sound a bit tubby. I had read that others commented on a bass boost, but it was more the low-mids (200-400Hz+? ish) that seemed to stand out in my recordings. I used an ORTF spacing at about 60 in. from the source, but still got a lot of the low-mids. It was my first attempt at using them, so I'm not sure if my perception will change with other spacing/placement patterns. Of note, I switched to pair of Royer R-122's and found them to have a more neutral (and ultimately more natural) sound character compared to the Soyuz. The jury is still out for me, though I will continue to experiment with the Soyuz because I think they have something great to offer. I just don't think I've found the sweet spot for placement yet. They are cool, I just haven't figured them out quite yet. In case anyone is wondering, I'm using a Millennia pre and Lynx Aurora converter, and recording in a church with some stone walls, and a 40 ft high vaulted oak ceiling.
This is our second pair of these great mics, so needless to say we love them for all needs for great sounding small diaphragm mics. Outstanding as overheads ! We will eventually get a pair of the tube version.
