The Soyuz 017 TUBE is a large diaphragm tube condenser microphone delivering a sound that is as rich, warm, solid, and beautiful as its hand-crafted, polished design suggests. The 017 features a cardioid capsule with a gold-sputtered, hand-tuned 34mm diaphragm. As with all Soyuz microphones, the 017 is completely handmade: bodies and capsules are manually machined, transformers are wound in-house, and all wiring is true point-to-point. The blue-badged 017 TUBE comes in a wooden case with a custom, hand-machined shock mount, special 6-pin cable, power supply, and extra 6ZH1P pentode tube.
The classic sound of the 017 was previously considered impossible to achieve with new microphones. Engineers routinely spent small fortunes on vintage condensers and fought to keep them operational as they aged as new models – and even reissues – were often not imbued with the same desired characteristics despite their hefty price tags. This is not surprising: manufacturing techniques have changed, why wouldn’t the results? With its open top-end, smooth mid-range, powerful – yet balanced – low-end, and remarkably robust build quality, the 017 is destined to be the future benchmark of that elusive mixture of accuracy and sonic flattery that has sent vintage prices soaring.
Collectively, the engineers at Soyuz have spent decades studying, servicing, and building classic microphones; this unique pool of knowledge, craft, and skill — combined with the golden ears of numerous musicians, producers, and audio engineers — has culminated in the creation of the custom S17 capsule used in the 017 Series. Based on the legendary K67 capsule developed in 1960, Soyuz has further modified the design to achieve an airy yet accurate high end, elegantly smooth midrange presence, and a robust but balanced bottom end.
The SU-017 redefines the classic tube large diaphragm microphone. Soyuz' proprietary transformer, vintage tube, and handmade capsule work in concert to create a sound that is rich and balanced across the frequency spectrum, with a top end that is open and never harsh. Its smoother, rounded top-end is perfect for sources requiring warmth with slightly more coloration.
Sounds absolutely fantastic on vocals and acoustic guitars thus far! This is definitely the most I’ve spent on a mic before, so I really wanted to be honest with myself (and whoever is reading this) about my thoughts on this. I was almost hoping to find a flaw in the mic so that I couldn’t justify spending the 4k, but I’ve found none yet in these first two months and this thing is not leaving my side! Immediately, I could tell the midrange was just fantastic on vocals. High end is smooth and not brittle at all. Made me realize how harsh and just not great the last tube LDC is I’ve been using haha. There’s a lot of good cheaper LDC’s out there now, but this mic really is special, at least compared to the ones I’ve had my hands on. On acoustic guitars, I was really thrilled with this mic as well. The low end was full but not boomy, and even when recording a larger Martin guitar, any resonance in the low end was super easy to tame while still allowing the guitar to have a full body to it. All in all, the mic has been so fun and inspiring to use and even just running through the preamps on my Apollo twin, I’m getting solid results. Lastly, maybe my favorite thing about this mic is that im now saving a ton of time not having to do ridiculous EQ moves to notch out harshness or weird resonances on tracks. I think there’s a lot of value in getting started with just decent gear that really pushes you to fight for a great sound, but it’s quite clear to me now how much value is in having a mic like this that sounds truly fantastic while tracking and is inspiring to use. Feels good to have faith in your tools! Stoked to have been able to snag one of these!
First, the service from Alex and Vintage King was incredible, as always. Then the mic arrives in the most beautiful packaging I’ve ever seen. A briefcase-sized wooden box with unique, pro, collector documentation. Then the mic—absolutely gorgeous. Incredible design and the sound…holy cow. I sold a vintage U67 and got this to replace it and I don’t feel shortchanged one bit. In fact, this sounds more like a U47. So warm, full bottom but clear. I could not love it more.
