Shadow Hills spares nothing when it comes to building reliable gear that sounds great. This attitude and general approach to designing equipment led them to make some of the best studio compressors and preamps in the industry. This tradition continued when the Oculus was created. One of the finest reference monitor consoles ever made, it’s the ultimate centerpiece born from years of experience and a devotion to sonic purity. The Oculus brings the necessary elements of your studio’s workflow at your fingertips: monitor reference level control, talkback, autocue, Class A headphone outs, and more.
The Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor is a mastering grade compressor/limiter with two compressors (stereo or dual mono) in series and three different output transformer selections (Nickel, Iron, and Steel) to choose between clean, colored, and dirty textures.. The optical section is entirely bypassable, and it’s possible to bypass both compression sections to use the transformer section alone. The metering can reflect optical gain reduction, discrete gain reduction, or output level. These versatile bypass and metering options make the Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor suitable as both a tracking compressor and a bus compressor.
The Shadow Hills Dual Vandergraph is a fully discrete stereo descendant of the Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor and maintains its reputation of unquestionable quality and exceptional performance in a 500 Series format. The Dual Vandergraph specifically makes use of Swiss-made attenuators to control the Compression and Output Level settings; the Sidechain Filter Matrix controls the frequency sensitivity (positions: 90 hertz, 150 hertz, 250 hertz and Bandpass). Like the Mastering Compressor, the Dual Vandergraph’s all-discrete Class-A inner workings and custom Iron Transformers provide great possibilities for new recording techniques and superior dynamic control.
The Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor is a company classic, partly due to its great array of functions and general versatility, but its military-inspired build quality and key features can also be found on other pieces, like the Mono GAMA Mic Pre. Sharing the ability to toggle between different output transformers, the Mono GAMA Mic Pre really changes the game when tracking. With the turn of a knob, you can audition different tonal characteristics to complement the microphone in use and/or the material being recorded. This feature equates to having three different mic preamps in one single-channel 500 series unit. All the common Mic-Pre features are present, yet the build quality is unmatched; there’s also a 4-channel version called the Quad GAMA.
If you want to experience a little bit of everything Shadow Hills has to offer, including the GAMA mic preamp, consider the Shadow Hills Equinox, a complete small-format recording console in just two rack spaces. It features two GAMA mic preamps, 30 channels of analog summing, and a mastering-grade monitor controller. The summing network effectively allows you to choose between the sounds of three different consoles on the mix bus, due to the selectable output transformers. With all these features in a rugged 2U enclosure, the Shadow Hills Equinox is equipped for the demands of modern recording but styled and crafted to the high aesthetic standards of a different time and place.
Shadow Hills boasts a reputation to deliver quality builds that will make a positive mark on modern recording, ensuring their slogan: “Victory is our business.”No matter your studio or recording needs, Vintage King is here to help find you the best solution from Shadow Hills.
