The Rupert Neve Designs Newton Channel is a powerful channel strip rooted in recording technology's most iconic design legacy. Built to deliver classic sound with an intuitive workflow, the Newton Channel gives you musical tone-shaping, proven reliability, and the instantly recognizable character of a Rupert Neve Designs product. Equally at home in project studios, large facilities, or live touring rigs, the Newton Channel makes the RND experience more accessible than ever before. The channel strip’s flexible toolset includes a fully Class A mic preamp, discrete three-band EQ, fast and flexible VCA compressor, and custom transformer-coupled outputs with RND’s beloved variable Silk Blue and Red harmonic color stage. The Newton Channel pays homage to Rupert Neve’s birthplace, Newton Abbot, England. Tracing the arc of his work from vintage to modern, the Newton channel delivers the world-class sound and performance of Rupert Neve Designs.
The Rupert Neve-designed mic preamp and input stage are the sonic heart of the Newton channel, capturing the distinctive tone and musicality of Rupert Neve Designs hardware. With a tight, detailed sound and 72 dB of clean gain, this preamp is flexible and easy to dial in thanks to its 6dB variable trim control. While Newton Channel’s input stage is tailored for standard microphone impedance, it handles line-level signals with ease. That means the Newton channel can act as a high-end outboard processor for mixing tasks. The input stage also includes Rupert Neve Designs’ distinctive variable high-pass filter for precise control of low-frequency build-up at the source.
The Newton Channel’s EQ section offers fast and flexible operation with signature Rupert Neve Designs character. Its high and low shelving filters, fully parametric mid-band and detented gain controls allow for precise and powerful tonal control. The high and low shelves offer two selectable frequencies and the sweepable mid-band features a fixed Q setting that’s optimized for musicality and precision. With a frequency range spanning from 220 Hz to 7 kHz, the flexible mid-band is ideal for critical EQ tasks like taming low-mids, boosting presence and removing harshness.
The Newton Channel’s compressor section builds on RND’s ultra-smooth VCA compressor design to let you dial in effortless dynamics control for any source. With +20 dB of makeup gain, variable release time and pre/post EQ routing options, the compressor can tackle everything from subtle control to aggressive squash.
Rupert Neve’s coveted Silk circuit rounds out the Newton’s signal path with two unique flavors of harmonic enhancement. Silk gives you direct control of crucial 2nd and 3rd order harmonics in your signal by saturating a custom Rupert Neve Designs output transformer. Adjusting the variable Texture knob lets you dial in the ideal harmonic density for any incoming signal. Choose Silk Red to highlight harmonics in the highs and upper mids, or Silk Blue to accentuate those in the lows and low mids. The Newton Channel’s Silk/Texture circuit is capable of everything from subtle transformer enhancement to intense harmonic coloration. Add power, sparkle, and harmonic density to any sound with Rupert Neve Design’s beloved Silk circuit.
The Newton Channel’s output stage features a custom transformer and a second -6 dBu XLR output in addition to its standard, balanced line level out. As you drive the Newton harder with hotter inputs or heavier Silk saturation, the -6 dbu output works to keep levels in check for the next device in the chain. That means you can take full advantage of the available transformer harmonics without ever running out of headroom.
I went in to VK looking for a Neve 1073, and walked out with one of these instead. In my opinion, this isn’t a piece that sounds great straight from the box, you have to tweak the settings to get the sound you want. I spent a couple hours playing with the settings and realized that you can make this bad boy sound ANY WAY you want. It can give you that Neve saturated color, or if you lay off the mic pre gain, it gives you a very natural balanced sound. I like my vocals relatively bright with a lot of silky top end sitting at the front of the mix, and I as able to achieve that using the Newton mic pre and eq going into a Distressor. I feel like I haven’t fully understood the Newtons, compressor,it sounds good but I prefer the flexibility of my Distressor. Overall, amazing piece of gear!!! Highly recommend to those who don’t want to spend 4K on a Shelford unit.
Well I just got my Newton and ...how can I say this... it is what they said it is. I dont own the Shelford but I don't think I need one more than I want one after getting the Newton. Everything, and I do mean everything sounds good thru it. The most shocking part of this equipment is the Compressor!! This hits waaay over its weight class and I would even say I don't NEEEED a CL1B now.. But Im probably still going to get one of those too. If anyone is complaining about what it doest have or do, just understand that this is a NEW from scratch channel done with modern technology and in my opinion it does not need to do what the shelford does because you can get the same results...just quicker... and cheaper. The Shelford is still a very impressive piece and If money was no object I would buy one just because. The sound is pure neve or not so Neve if you desire it with this thing and the EQ does not disappoint either. This could easily go on a desert Island list. I highly recommend this if your a 1073 fan or a Shelford fan and want the sound of both without the hefty price of both. I know I will get some hate for saying that but hey who cares as long as it does what I want it to do. It will leave your jaw dragging on the ground if you have any real talent or experience with high end gear like this.
