Royer Labs R-10 Ribbon Microphone

Hand-built microphone with an R-121 ribbon element and custom designed transformer
MFR# R-10

Product Description

The Royer Labs R-10 is a passive ribbon microphone that can handle pressure levels up to 160 dB. With it’s flat frequency response, well balanced sound field as well as it’s compact size and mounting configuration, the R-10 is a great fit in any studio or live application.

Plosives aren't a problem with the R-10, Royer Labs has developed a multi-layered wind screen that provides superior protection from air blasts. The wind screen also helps reduce proximity effect which helps close miking guitar cabinets and acoustic instruments without the muddy build-up in the low end. The open grill configuration minimizes standing waves and associated comb-filtering effects.

The ribbon transducer has a newly designed internal shock mount which isolates the ribbon from shocks and vibrations. This new feature adds a rugged quality to the microphone and greatly increases the ribbons durability.

The R-10 is a perfect match for electric guitars, brass instruments, acoustic instruments, drums, and room miking. It’s figure-8 response captures a smooth representation of the direct source as well as natural ambience of the room.

With the ability to handle such high SPL, you can have the R-10 right over a drum set or next to a screaming electric guitar cabinet and not have to worry about any extra distortion or damaging the ribbon.

The R-10 has a patented offset-ribbon design which positions the ribbon towards the front of the transducer allowing higher SPL levels to be achieved on the front side of the microphone. The rear side of the microphone offers a brighter frequency response on lower SPL sound sources.

FEATURES:

  • High SPL capability for electric guitar, brass and other close miking applications
  • Multi-layered wind screen provides superior protection to ribbon element
  • Internally shock-mounted ribbon transducer gives increased durability
  • Passive design and custom transformer minimize high SPL overload
  • Extremely low residual noise
  • Ribbon element not affected by heat or humidity
  • Absence of high-frequency peaks, “ringing” and phase shifts
  • Equal sensitivity from front or back of the element

RECOMMENDED APPLICATIONS:

  • Close miking in the studio and on live stages
  • Electric & acoustic guitars
  • Drum overheads, kick drum (see manual for position),
  • room miking
  • Percussion instruments
  • Brass, horn sections

Am currently recording an album and have used this on guitars. Excellent mic at this price point. You can turn the mic to the backside and get a tad bit brighter tone. Build quality is great. Royer hit a home run on this one. If your on the fence, just go ahead and order it!

Contact sales rep (Josh) looking for a microphone to complement my SM-57. Directed me to video on VK web site on Royer mic’s. Choose the R-10 and with money saved instead of R-121 bought the Royer dB booster. They sound great with both Audient console and UAD Apollo. Couldn’t be happier. Brad Howling Hounds studio Tucson.

Got a pair of these recently and while they are the first ribbon mics I've owned, I've got experience with other Royers and AEA ribbons. The R10 is obviously a bit brighter than say a 121 or other more traditional ribbons, but the top end is still very smooth. I've been using then primarily on electric guitar and all over in drum recordings. On acoustic guitar, surprisingly the R10 wasn't my favorite. I think it has more to do with my room but in my situation, it's not wonderful on acoustic. Electric guitar the R10 is certainly my new "go to" mic. I've done a lot of recording with a classic 121/57 combo. The R10 stands well enough on its own, no need for the 57s added top end. They are great as overheads, room, outside kick mic. Just a great mic and great value.

Amazing mic! I record brass instruments and this has helped me in getting the finer sounds of these instruments. I use an Apollo UAD Quad to complete the perfect combination.

Best guitar sounds I've recorded through a Vox AC30. Just a killer sound. It does a great job of taming the wrangley highs coming off a telecaster. Really great mic.

Purchased this from Vintage King whilst on vacation in LA from the UK. Haven't had much opportunity to use it so far but have recorded some acoustic guitar (through my SPL Channel One preamp) and the results are excellent. A very good value mic for the price and great service from both VK and Royer Labs.

This was my first experience buying something from Vintage King (although I surf the "used" categories on the website frequently!), and, despite being on the other side of the world, I had absolutely no trouble and everything went very smoothly.
