Active Studio Monitors are the most common choice of speaker in today’s recording studio. With a built-in amplification and crossover, they are easily integrated into any studio environment. Vintage King offers a very extensive catalog of Active Studio Monitors, from the very impressive high-end professional series like Barefoot Sound or ATC Loudspeakers to budget-friendly options like the Focal 40, or Adam AX series.
As the speaker size increases, so does the apparent bass response. Look into something with a 12 or 15-inch woofer to achieve maximum bass and a full range of frequency response. Brands like Augspurger have outstanding options for studio mains. Other options include the ATC SCM45a, or Barefoot MicroMain26, which have smaller bass drivers but still deliver a full representation of the low end.
Smaller bass drivers will reduce the bass response of the speaker but can add more focus to the mid-range, and higher frequencies of a mix. Models such as the ATC SCM25A, and Focal Alpha 65 have been go-to, studio monitors for mixing engineers for years. Other models such as the Barefoot Footprint 01 offers a full sound in the entire frequency spectrum but have internal DSP that can model other smaller speakers such as NS10s and Auratones. It is ideal to pair a larger set of studio monitors with a small set, covering all different types of listening environments.
You’ll want to match the speaker set to the size of your room.
