Line level mixers, or line amps are a great way to add more flexibility to your recording setup. Some preamps or channel strips don’t have an adjustable output control, so if you boost EQ, or overdrive the preamp for harmonic distortion, often times the signal will overload your A/D D/A converter, causing unpleasant noise unable to be fixed in the mixing process. With a line mixer, you can send audio out of your preamp into the mixer, then either raise or lower the overall level coming into your DAW interface.
Some line amps work similar to a DI, such as the Avalon U5, which will accept line level signal, and boost up to 30 dB. Then has a tone control that can either brighten or darken the signal to properly blend into the track. This is great for bass and keyboards, also recording a clean electric guitar signal for the ability to reamp later for alternate guitar tones.
Line amps can also act as a harmonic distortion device, adding analog character and vibe to any source. You can send signal into the mixer, then adjust the input to the amount of harmonic distortion is wanted, then attenuate with the output control to make sure proper level is going into your DAW interface.
