Pultec EQP-500X 500 Series Program Equalizer
The Pultec EQP-500X brings the sound of the classic 19” 2U rack mountable EQP-1A3-SS and EQP-153-SS into your 500 series rack, offering the best features from both units. The op-amp is based on the classic API 2520, which is a much different sound from the vacuum tube models, but is preferred by many engineers due to their consistency and crystal clear tone.
The low band offers boost and attenuation of 30 Hz, 40 Hz, 70 Hz and 100 Hz. The bandwidth control will shape the EQ response of the higher frequencies from sharp to broad.
The 500X has a unique group of frequencies to choose from in the higher band, offering peak boost of 1 kHz, 2 kHz, 3 kHz, 4 kHz, 5 kHz, 8 kHz, 10 kHz, 12 kHz and 16 kHz. On the classic shelving Pultec, you would lose the 16 kHz peak boost, which is a favorite to many engineers on the classic EQP-1a. To combine the best of both worlds, the 500X dropped the 6 kHz peak boost and added back the 16kHz band. You can also choose between two shelving boost frequencies of 5 kHz and 10 kHz.
Attenuation of higher frequencies are independent from the selected boosted bands and include options for 5 kHz, 10 kHz and 20 kHz.

n a sentence, well worth the price of admission and has changed my thinking about what can fit in a 500-series space.
I don't have much experience with the original solid-state Pultecs, so my impressions are against the tube units - they're definitely tighter in the bass, but simultaneously seem more powerful. Where I used to be at a 3-4 boost, I'm now barely tapping 2. Running anything through the op-amps results in a noticeably deeper and more expansive sound stage. The old boost/attenuate tricks work just great, and the high shelf functions are super useful for sitting on top of an already summed program and opening it right up. I've barely powered my pair down since I got them and continue to be impressed.
Same top end as the rack version, slightly tighter low end when compared to the large rack version - perfect for vocals, which is where I usually use it to open up the "air" in the voice - CK
Amazing unit. Thank you for steering me in this direction.
Wonderful and faithful version of the classic in a 500 series. Punchy and broad in it's enhancement -- surprisingly great on the mix buss.
It's been fixed on my master bus since I got it, right after the bus comp. I just have it on a fixed setting and never move it. It's fat and clear and my mixes come together very nicely with minimal eq needed. 100% recommended.
