The Heritage Audio HERCHILD Next Gen Model 670N compressor is a modern reimagining of the classic Fairchild stereo tube compressor/limiter updated for contemporary studios. It combines the signature vari-mu character of the original Fairchild design with updated features such as independent bypass, advanced sidechain filtering, and a redesigned transformer-coupled output stage. Equipped with military-grade NOS tubes, custom transformers, and Class A circuitry, the updated 670N delivers warm, vintage-inspired tone with musical saturation. Tailor-made for modern studio, the 670N features stepped controls, updated attack and release options, and multiple operating modes provide precise dynamic control.

HERCHILD NEXT GEN MODEL 670N VS HERCHILD 670

Compared with the original HERCHILD Model 670, the 670N retains the classic vari-mu sonics but adds features and workflow improvements that increase flexibility and transparency. The 670N introduces independent bypass per channel, a redesigned transformer-coupled output stage based on the HA-880, front-panel DC threshold adjustment, and an advanced sidechain filter. Attack and release values have been reworked for today’s sources, and stepped potentiometers provide repeatable settings.

NOS MILITARY-GRADE TUBES

At the heart of the HERCHILD design are four NOS 6BA6 tubes, which provide its rich, warm tone. These military-grade valves are selected for their low noise, consistent gain, and long life, so you can count on consistent, reliable results every time. When driven gently, these tubes add subtle warmth and even-order harmonics. Pushed harder, they kick out classic valve saturation that adds presence and power.

SIX ATTACK AND RELEASE SETTINGS

For added flexibility, the Next Gen 670N features six updated attack and release settings to suit today's production needs while preserving the compressor's classic sound. The stepped controls make it easy to quickly dial in your favorite settings for different sources. As a program-dependent, variable-mu compressor, the 670N's effective ratio and knee change with input level, so selecting the right time constants lets you sculpt dynamics without introducing pumping or unnatural artifacts. Use faster attacks for taming peaks, medium settings for glue and sustain, and longer times for smooth, vintage-style leveling.

ADVANCED SIDECHAIN FILTERING

Advanced sidechain filtering provides precise control over what the detector circuit responds to, making the 670N more versatile than ever. The sidechain circuit reduces low-frequency influence on the detection circuit so bass-heavy content won’t trigger excessive gain reduction, preserving punch while offering increased transparency. This is especially useful on drum busses and full mixes where bass energy can dominate.

MULTIPLE MODES OF OPERATION

The HERCHILD Next Gen Model 670N offers multiple modes, including LAT, VERT, and LAT/VERT LINK to accommodate stereo, dual-mono, and mid-side workflows. LAT mode preserves lateral/vertical behavior, which is useful for mastering and cutting applications, while VERT mode treats channels independently for dual-mono processing. LAT, VERT, and LAT/VERT LINK allow you to easily widen or tighten the stereo image of your mixes, making the 670N a flexible tool for tracking, mixing, and mastering
