The Pettyjohn Handwired PreDrive studio grade, dual foot-switchable guitar preamp is designed to be the first pedal in your chain. Built in the USA with two discrete opamp chips and audiophile components throughout, the PreDrive will preserve every detail of any instrument plugged into it! The PreDrive’s preamp was designed to serve the unique needs of a matching impedances of magnetic pickups, typical in electric and bass guitars, and can be used as a preamp for almost any instrument outfitted with a magnetic pickup. With a full frequency range and a transformer coupled Direct Output, you can capture great direct in tones in the studio, perfect for reamping, using virtual amps or even use the PreDrive in front of digital effects units to add extra dimension and clarity to your tone.
Features:
Let me preface this review by saying I just got this pedal in yesterday but I did play around with it for about 6 hours. The sound is very subtle but quite rich. The Pre-amp side adds a touch of clarity on the top end and some body in the low-mids. The boost is quite nice as well. The boost side seemed to be very transparent, which is a word that I think is thrown around too much. But I really feel as though I'm just hearing my amp being pushed more and that any extra overdrive I'm hearing is coming from the amp being saturated with signal rather than the pedal creating noise, and there seem to be no added eq tweaks, which is exactly what I was looking for. There were some negatives I experienced but they didn't necessarily impact the tonal quality. The input gain pot was extremely scratchy straight out of the box. Once set however, there were no noticeable extra noises. Also the switches give a noticeable "pop" when pressed. I would like to use this pedal in a live setting but if the "poping" remains a problem I don't really see myself using it there. Which is a shame because, again, the pedal sounds really nice.
