British electronics engineer Rupert Neve went into business in the 1960s building recording consoles, and nearly immediately changed the history of recorded music. Promptly sought out by the BBC, Neve’s equipment is revered for its top-quality transformers in the signal path and its all-discrete Class A design. Designs like the 1073 have become world-famous for their rich, warm sound and their versatile, smooth EQ section. Need proof? Just take a glance at how many companies have recreated this timeless design. Neve consoles can be heard on countless albums, both classic and modern: Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Jimmy Eat World, Foo Fighters, and many more.
Rupert Neve would eventually sell AMS Neve and leave the brand in 1975, but the company continued on as a juggernaut in pro audio. In 1992, the Neve brand joined forces with AMS (Advanced Music Systems) in 1992, and this partnership exists until today. Neve classics continue to be made and the brand has even brought back some classic pieces from AMS history including the RMX16 reverb.
Several decades after they were created, vintage Neve modules remain in use in studios all over the world. From the famous 1073 and 1081 mic pres, to the legendary 2254 compressor and the exquisite 33609, Neve consoles and equipment have stood the test of time in both functionality and sound. Yet, the brand still continues to innovate and recreate many of these classic pieces of gear.
Neve has revived many of its classic pieces of gear with painstaking attention, including the BCM-10 console, while also bringing its classics into the modern era. Recently, the brand has released the 1073OPX, which offers eight 1073 mic pres and optional Dante connectivity, in addition to a 500 Series version of the AMS RMX16.
Whether it’s vintage or new, Neve continues to dominate the industry with its incredible designs. It’s no wonder that engineers young and old alike hold Neve as the most sought-after brand of audio equipment. So don’t wait.
