Prior to the passing of revolutionary thinker Dr. Robert Moog, he began to help Moog Music prep for the company's next phase in their development. Moving the brand's operations to his adopted home of Asheville, North Carolina, the storied synthesizer creator helped his namesake select a new headquarters and design its floor plan. It's an impact that is still felt at Moog Music nearly 12 years later.
The Moog legacy is centered on a lineage of modular synthesizers. The iconic brand grew from the successful efforts of synthesis pioneer, Bob Moog, whose groundbreaking strides serve as the backbone of several models in their diverse lineup. To this day, Moog continues to handcraft the most sought after synthesizers in the world.
Bob Moog introduced the first synthesizer on October 12, 1964 at an AES convention in New York. The unveiling of his voltage-controlled instrument paved the way for modern synthesizers and opened doors of creativity for musicians in search of unconventional sounds. Moog’s products altered the public’s perception of electronic instruments, forever leaving a permanent mark on the progression of music and sound design during the late 60s and early 70s. The modular Moog relics from the early years stand at the height of sound and build-quality.
Moog pushed music forward during a period when musicians were on the edge of discovering the future of sound. In 1971, the relationship between music and engineering reached a new milestone after the release of the Minimoog. The flagship Moog synthesizer put the power of modular systems on stage. The Minimoog, which resulted from a happy accident and a few calculation errors, became the tool of choice for several bands and virtuosos of the decade. Its unique configuration and interesting array of textures lead to subsequent generations of other models that further solidified Moog’s legacy.
Moog synthesizers are manufactured at the Moog Music factory in Asheville, NC. Every model is constructed by hand using quality materials sourced primarily in the USA. Traditional production techniques are combined with forward-minded specs to meet the demands of musicians in the digital age. Classic oscillators, velocity-sensitive Fatar keyboards, and extensive parameters sit at the core of durable frame enclosures.
Traditional circuitry is the root of several different Moog archetypes, however there’s an abundance of innovative concepts in production, like the Multidrive circuit installed on the Moog SUBsequent 37. In addition to ongoing advances in design, Moog makes synthesizers that integrate within analog and digital workflows for great flexibility. Use a Moog Sirin to embed an analog engine into your preferred DAW, or install the Mother-32 into a Eurorack system. The possibilities are practically endless.
“I see my job as being one that must provide the artist with the capability of imparting complexity and dynamics to his music.”
