Today, the Manley Labs factory is located in Chino, California, but their first commercially available products were constructed at the old Vacuum Tube Logic of America (VTL) factory. At that time, EveAnna Manley was hired on to the VTL production team prior to Manley’s first professional products (Manley Enhanced Pultec, Manley Reference Cardioid, and Reference Gold). In 1993, Manley Laboratories, Inc. became a separate entity apart from VT; EveAnna took on a sales role. After Dave Manley left in 1996, EveAnna took control of Manley Labs after having worked her way up through the ranks. With EveAnna at the helm, Manley Labs began developing new products; some gone on to become industry legends.
Manley’s channel strips offer high voltage, high headroom, and high fidelity. The Manley FORCE 4-Channel Microphone Preamp is composed of the best technology and strategies the brand has to offer. It starts with an innovative power supply featuring high voltage vacuum tubes, something Manley never compromises on. The strong Manley sound pays full respect to transients and delivers sonic excellence in just about every way. Whether it’s the FORCE, the CORE, or the renowned VOXBOX, Manley channel strips and preamplifiers have versatile features, timeless style, robust build quality, and the world-famous Manley sound.
When it comes to studio-grade equalizers, Manley is magic. The interpretive versions of the classic Pultec EQ carry the essence of what put Pultec EQ on the map, but these models act as enhanced performers of the timeless EQ. In fact, Pultec pioneer Gene Shenk himself gave them the green light to create their own version. Unlike the original, the MANLEY ENHANCED PULTEC EQP-1A can run completely transformerless and has a superior power supply, with additional frequencies to tweak. Manley also has a unique passive EQ of its own known as the MASSIVE PASSIVE, a secret weapon that can add monstrous boosts without muddying up a signal.
Quite a few legendary pieces of Manley gear came from the ‘90s, but few compare to the Manley ELOP stereo electro-optical limiter. The revised ELOP+ behaves somewhat like an LA-2A, but also builds upon the original ELOP that became popular in the early ‘90s. The added 3:1 compression ratio makes it perfectly capable of handling accurate dynamic control on a 2-buss. Like the Manley’s ELOP+, the sound achieved through the Manley Nu Mu is also strikingly natural and punchy. The Manley Nu Mu finesses dynamic control to bring up lower level details without knocking the life out of exciting transients. Manley excels at building a diverse collection of dynamic processors, so you’re bound to find a model suited for what your studio needs.
Manley’s reference microphones were some of the first professional products that bore the name. The Manley Reference Cardioid and Reference Gold have been around for quite a while, for good reason. The Reference Cardioid is considered a go-to modern tube microphone for today’s pop music artists and engineers, partly because it enhances every voice it captures. Manley likes to call it the “Just Add Talent” microphone. Its character is akin to vintage European tube mics such as the beloved U47. 27 years after the debut of the Reference Cardioid and Reference Gold, Manley added the warm and natural Reference Silver to the collection.
The dense array of recording, mixing, and mastering equipment offered by Manley is designed to make work a little easier. All models are flexible, powerful, and built to last. Every model from the renowned STEREO VARIABLE MU to the MASTERING MASSIVE PASSIVE is built in a stunning housing and features intuitive parameters for great control and the best analog performance in the industry. Owning a Manley product is a worthwhile investment that will undoubtedly serve your work, clients, and studio for years to come.
