For decades, a war has raged between the East and West coasts. Lines have been drawn, battles have been fought and countless fine young men and women have dedicated their lives to crowning a superior synthesis technique. Back in the early 60s when analog synthesizers were first coming to fruition, two dominant techniques were formed. Robert Moog, creator of the legendary Moog synthesizers pioneered a subtractive synthesis technique on the east coast which allowed musicians to convert basic waveforms into music using simple filters. Meanwhile, Donald Buchla developed a far-out synthesis technique on the west coast that used an innovative new control scheme to create emotive sounds. Now, after 50-plus years, the war has finally come to an end — but neither technique has been crowned the victor... the ultimate synthesis technique was not derived on the east coast, or the west: it comes from the Make Noise 0-Coast.
The 0-COAST is a single voice patchable synthesizer that combines elements from both the Moog and Buchla paradigms to create an all new "no coast synthesis" technique.
In the spirit of east coast synthesis, 0-COAST is designed to offer quick and simple subtractive synthesis on the go. 0-COAST utilizes classic modular synthesis techniques, but each circuit has also been hard-wired to allow for cable-free patching. Simply connect your favorite MIDI keyboard and start creating music with this expressive, musical monosynth.
Taking a page from west coast synthesis techniques, 0-COAST can also be used to create complex, otherworldly sounds using additive or FM synthesis techniques. Break out the patch cables and start experimenting with new ways to wire up your 0-COAST to create unique sounds bear no relation to any form of music you’ve ever known.
0-COAST packs a ton of features into a surprisingly small package. Featuring two channels of MIDI to CV and MIDI to gate options, 0-COAST is capable of creating complex synth sounds in any style. 0-COAST is highly customizable, featuring patching across 13 sources and 14 destinations and compatibility with Eurorack Modular Synthesizer Signals for limitless possibilities. Use the built-in MIDI Controlled Arpeggiator to create driving rhythms, or dial in biting leads with the triangle core analog VCO. Use the overtone and multiply functions for interesting timbral effects or use the unique transistor-based low-pass gate dynamics to create evolving pads. Craft unique synth sounds for any genre using the flexible, powerful, portable 0-COAST synthesizer.
Amazing semi-modular synth, a good start for whoever wants to learn about modular synthesis
Great and love it.
Love my O-COAST!! VINTAGE KING wasted no time sending it. Shipping was lightning fast and secure. Excellent transaction.
Sounds great weaving melodies behind the Moogs. Very versatile.
Fantastic! Very unique and refreshing approach to sound design. Found it very simple to get started. I would say this was more fun to learn than subtractive synths. Very fun not knowing what the hell you are doing while finding sweet spots with ease. The lack of patch memory forces you to experiment and enjoy the value of your own creation. The sound may not be for everyone but if you are even remotely interested in this i would say go for it. You can easily resell them for almost what you paid new.
Excellent product and support from Makenoise. And kiddos as well to Vintage King for their service. Highly recommended!
This is a great addition for synthesists looking for something different to add to the mix. It is not a 'do everything' synth you would buy for mutli-purpose "I only have one synth" situation. At least IMHO. Being experienced with the "East Coast" subtractive synths, this had a short transition time to me to get oriented with the control terminology, and how that translates to what I already understand about synths. It is not that alien once you get the gist what these terms / concepts relate to in signal flow you may already understand about analog synths. The PDF manual is excellent at explaining. But the most important thing is the sound, and this really does have a great sound with unique character. Thus why I think it is a good add even if you have a lot of other synths. Small turns of the knobs go a long way in changing the sound, and the sweetest aspects of this are those little in-between sounds that excite my ears with wonderful harmonically rich character. I would like to give this five stars, but have to take point off for the device not having an on/off switch. Yes, to turn it on/off you either have to unplug the DC adaptor from the unit, wall wart from power strip, or turn off the power strip. I am not so sure pulling/inserting the power jack into any device is a good idea if being done over & over again, as this can cause wear & loose connections over time. But then again it is inconvenient to get to the power strip under my work table. It is not a deal breaker though where I would want to miss out on owning such a great sounding little synth.
REALLY like this box. It's a wonderful introduction to modular/semi-modular synths. Love the non-typical sounds and it's incredible flexibility. Even built a 30º, custom oak stand for it
Total no brainer, versatile, plays nice with others while nealry endless on its own. Thoughtful design through and through. Don’t overthink it, give it a whirl.
I love this, totally addictive ;)
