The Lauten Audio FC-387 Atlantis is the three distinct FET microphones packed into a single, hand-finished brass enclosure. Designed in close collaboration with renowned Producer and Mix Engineer Fab Dupont, the Atlantis provides a dynamic and versatile wealth of sound that makes picking the right microphone for even the most troublesome sources as easy as flipping a switch. From modern, tight and bright to smoky vintage velvet, the Atlantis offers an analog abundance of ready-for-mix sounds in a single microphone.
Three separate signal paths are readily available for effortless timbral selection at the flip of a switch. The Gentle selection is warm with a vintage feel, ideal for taming bright or abrasive sound sources. The Neutral selection is classy and balanced with a smooth top-end, perfect for acoustic instruments. The Forward selection is bold, present and modern, without ever being harsh – the quintessential sound of modern Pop, Hip-Hop, and R&B.
The capsule of a microphone captures music’s most meaningful moments and converts them into electricity with relentlessly unforgiving results. Lauten's precision-crafted 38mm capsule is one of the largest in the world -- a one of a kind super-transducer designed in Silicon Valley and tuned by hand to capture the spirit, soul and wonder of a performance with unprecedented authenticity and realism.
Further extending the versatility of the Atlantis is a three-position gain switch. The +10 dB selection is ideal for use with quiet sound sources and consumer-grade audio interfaces where more character from the microphone itself is desired. The -10 dB selection is useful when more color and saturation from a high-end preamp is desired, or when paired with very loud sounds. Set to 0, the output of the Atlantis is at its default output selection.
Polar patterns have a significant impact on the sound of a microphone because each selection determines what the microphone hears. A Cardioid selection will focus all of the microphone’s attention directly to where it is pointed. This is the most commonly used polar pattern for sound sources such as vocals. Figure-8 and Omnidirectional selections allow the sound of a room or other off-axis instrumentation to be captured in a more open, natural or authentic way. These patterns are extremely useful for recording acoustic sound sources like guitar, piano, or drums.
The Atlantis signal path is hand-populated with high resolution, low distortion polypropylene capacitors, a US made low-noise FET, and a custom wound output transformer that puts the finishing touches on every sound that passes through its copper windings. The result is a smooth, mix-ready sound brimming with life.
After being hand-polished, the Atlantis’ solid brass enclosure is hand finished with a durable, non-toxic ceramic coating and baked in an oven for curing before final assembly, burn-in, and testing.
Each Atlantis is lovingly designed and crafted to last a lifetime in Silicon Valley, CA by the Lauten Audio family.
I bought the Atlantis primarily for vocals. It sounds really wonderful on female vocals, silky smooth in the mids and lows with a nice high end that doesn't bite. Probably the best feature other than the impressive build quality is the ability to engage 3 different circuits which provides 3 virtually different mics. The settings are "Forward" "Neutral" and 'Gentle" I especially like the "GENTLE" setting for a softer vintage sound. The Neutral settings sounds rich and full on our Steinway grand. I have yet to track anything on the 'Forward" setting but will as soon as possible. At this price point I find I'm not yearning for any other high-end (more expensive) mics.
Lets make this short and sweet. FYI. This mic is smoother than my Manley Ref C and does not let you down on either setting. The mic almost seems like it has an internal soft limit and just shines if you sing direct or off axis into it. I have other mics that are great.....but this one just has that old school analog goodness that has to be heard and not explained. You wont need many plugins if you have a good pre and comp in the vocal chain. It just sits in the mix like it should. I have not heard this sound since recording in studios with SSL and 2 inch tape machines. Once you figure out your vocal chain, this just adds the finishing touch. I will go out on a limb and say that all my other mics are just in case I need them mics now. Don't buy this mic if you have no idea about the proper vocal chain and gain staging.. it will not do magic.. Unless you know how to actually make magic happen. I hope this review helps anyone on the fence about this mic.
This microphone is going to see a lot of use in our studio. Not only because it’s versatile, with three different settings for capsule voicing and three different polar patterns, but because it’s sound is honest; the vocalist or instrument AND the room around them sound like they do (or should) when you stand next to them.
This mic exceeded my expectations. I had been watching reviews for nearly a year and was finally convinced to make the investment. It has three different modes that make it one of the most versatile large diaphragm mics in my collection. It’s a solid, well built and quite heavy microphone. I’d recommend only a quality mic stand.
This is a microphone that can be used as the main microphone. It has a neutral timbre, and its response to different singers is above the same level. It is easy to remove common lip-tooth noises in post-production mixing, and its response to EQ is also very direct.
Excellent microphone that gives you 3 different flavors. The options on this mic are very usable, giving you 3 mics in 1. Worth every penny in my book!
This mic is unique...the gentle mode represents the low mids like no other mic. Great for vocals or drum room mics! It is not flashy but is singularly cinematic. Very cool to add an immediate analog vibe to a track.
The Lauten Audio Atlantis is an extremely versatile and honest microphone. I decided on this mic to be a compliment to an LDC tube mic that I already use. I have had the Atlantis for a few years now and it has shined on many sources, from vocals to Acoustic guitar to Front of Kick, Drum Room Mic and mono and stereo Over heads and more. There are so many available options and tonal variations that come built into this microphone that I thought I would never use, Well I have used them all and this mic has proven to be an invaluable tool in my mic locker.
