Most Eurorack modular synthesizers are controlled by patching out of the oscillators, LFOs and modulators into other devices such as the sequencer, CV gate, or effects processors to create unit sounds and patterns. Adding a modular synth controller to your rig can allow you to trigger the sound as you would on an all inclusive synthesizer, and still have access to all of the added features of your Eurorack setup.

They also have a variety of controls directly at your fingertips rather than having to reach up to the Eurorack to change the sound, such as dedicated controls for range, scale, glide (some with the ability to change glide style), gate controls, and more. This can be incredibly handy when playing live, where you have to be moving quickly in order to change from section to section, or sound to sound.

Most module synth controllers are monophonic, since most modular synths can only generate one sound at a time. When dealing with a Eurorack setup that has a “Duo” feature, which allows you to generate two unique LFOs at the same time, the keyboard can be used in a duophonic mode.

Modular synth controllers are available in all shapes and sizes, ranging from single and dual octaves, the most common designs being 37 key or 61 key, all the way up to the standard sized 88 key keybed. If working with a smaller controller, you have the ability to shift octaves to make sure you can cover whatever frequency range you desire.

Most modular synth controllers can also send multiple independent CV outputs to your external synthesizers. This can allow you to manually generate a unique musical sequence pattern on the keyboard, which will then be altered by the variety of external modules you have connected.
