Focal Shape 65 Compact Powered Studio Monitor - Single
The Focal Shape 65 monitor is the largest available speaker in the Shape series, meant to be used as highly accurate near-field monitors while recording or mixing. Although they’re designed to be used as near-field speakers, they could pass for the main set of monitors at any facility due to their accuracy and attention to detail from the sub frequencies all the way up to the highest harmonic frequencies.
For the Optimal listening environment, position the Shape 65 three feet from the mixing position. For more flexibility, Shape 65 includes a low directivity tweeter that helps make a wider sweet spot in the mixing position.
Ideal for mixing in a small room, the Shape 65 was designed without ports so they could be positioned against a wall without extra build up in the lower frequencies. They also include threads for ceiling and wall mounts to easily install in the optimal location. The Flax Sandwich cone allows for a controlled and accurate bass response and extremely detailed mid-range to upper mid-range presence.
The rear panel includes controls for a high pass filter as well as a three band EQ. The high pass filter can be set to three different frequencies, 45 Hz, 60 Hz and 90 Hz. The low band on the EQ is set to a shelf at 250 Hz which can be boosted or cut 4 dB. The mid-range control is a bell curve that can boost or cut 3 dB at 1.5 kHz. The high frequency is a shelf that can boost or cut 3 dB at 4.5 kHz.

Out of the box they seemed pretty, um, boxy. After playing some dub (for the low end) for about 3 or 4 hours, I came back in and was very pleasantly surprised. In that short of time there was a very noticeable difference.
Of course they are clear, accurate, and smooth. What I love about them is that I can mix until I’m bored without getting ear fatigue, unlike the Genelec they replaced..
Tight and accurate. After I broke these in, I brought up a mix I had been working on and immediately heard minor problems with the balance and the low mids that I hadn’t noticed before. While I was breaking them in by shuffling through my iTunes library, I could hear details in my favorite songs I had never heard before. Love these monitors!
Went from neumann to these guys. Simply stellar improvement.
I like the overall focused image it gives!
