If you want the 47 sound but only need cardioid, reach for FLEA Microphones FLEA47 NEXT. The FLEA47 NEXT sounds identical to the FLEA47 and is built with the same wiring and components as the FLEA 47. The elimination of the omni pattern allowed FLEA to create a slightly different design. Compared to the FLEA47 design, the FLEA47 NEXT comes without a pattern selector, which is unnecessary due to the cardioid-only modification, along with a different microphone bottom connector - a 7-pin Binder connector.
I love the f7 capsule, the magic of creamy mid did nice job on aged male vocal, show the vitality of the elders
Having had the mic for some months, and putting it through its paces, I'm more than happy with it. I've had the Lawson tube, and the Peluso LE 47...both very nice mics, and obviously less expensive, but I don't feel at all cheated. I'd heard the Flea was bright, and I don't share that opinion. What's surprised me most is how much it can change character; worked up close, it's very vintage-sounding and as fat as you'd want this side of a big ribbon mic. Pulled back for acoustic guitar, it's very refined and even sounding...I don't think the word "classy" does anything justice, but yep, it's that, whatever that is. It's an easy mic to use and hard to make sound bad...in fact, it almost always sounds remarkable. Used in a Glyn Johns drum set up recently, it brought out a non-harsh brilliance from the cymbals...and in a challenging, overly bright room. It seemed to take overly bright and transform it into something special...quite a feat...I haven't had a mic that's been so capable until the Flea. I feel fortunate to have it.
This mic was my first venture in the >1000$ microphone. I always though it wasn't worth it to spend more. But I decided I was tired to chase the sound I had in mind for my vocals. And I wasn't disappointed at all! This mic is just awesome. It barely needs to be eqed at all! hearing yourself sing in this microphone is just pure joy. Can't believe I waited so long! If what you want is upfront vocals with a perfectly balanced and mix ready sound, then that's the mic you want. It's not dark, but sibilance is under control and it certainly is not a "bright" mic. There is bass and proximity, but not as much as you'd think, it's just perfect if you love to sing close to have this warm and intimate sound! I love it!
This thing is amazing on vocals!
Absolutely blown away with the sound of this microphone! I have several other 47 clones, but I’ve always wanted to try the FLEA. Am I glad I finally did! This thing sounds as good as any 47 I’ve used.
great mic, great deal if you don't need cardiod pattern changer on the Flea 47, the 'Next' model is ideal for vocals and acoustic gtr tracking
After hearing just about every 47 option out there, this one has caught my ear and landed in my studio. The 'Next' series works out perfect for me as I have no need for the other polar pattern that are on the standard Flea 47. To me there was no sonic difference between the two options and for about $1000 less this was in my budget. For female vocals, the Flea 12 is my go-to.
My salesman Jacob at VK turned me on to this model - I was looking for an authentic 47 sound but couldn't spend the bucks on vintage. It sounds super close to a nice vintage one I've rented in the past. It's a super upgrade for my vocal recordings. Thanks Jacob!
