The 1176LN limiting amplifier’s FET transistor circuitry injects its famously musical character and rich tone into every track. Though it can provide relatively transparent compression, the 1176 really shines when you crank up the gain reduction and embrace its analog coloration. In the right hands, this iconic FET compressor and peak limiter delivers the fat, punchy sounds heard on famous recordings by Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, and countless others.
Thanks to its "feedback" signal routing, the Universal Audio 1176 LN boasts extremely responsive attack time and release speeds. With ultra-fast attack times as low as 20 microseconds, the 1176 can act as a true peak limiter to catch initial transients to avoid clipping and distortion. The variable release controls allow you to tailor the reaction time for a smooth envelope or aggressive pumping effects.
One of the standout features of this classic limiting amplifier is its push-button ratio controls, which include settings for 4:1, 8:1, 12:1, and 20:1 gain reduction. These four settings allow you to easily switch between moderate compression and extreme limiting action, providing flexibility for almost any recording or mixing application. Pushing all four ratio buttons at once engages the extreme "nuke" or "British Mode" compression that helped make the 1176 compressor famous. Eric Brody’s advice was the push I needed to acquire the 1176LN, including a UA Bock 187 and I’m completely blown away!! Rounding out the signal flow with an API 3124MB+ and an Eventide 9000r and I’m in Rock Heaven! It’s possible a Neumann u87 would be as impressive but the cost of the Bock made this a bargain too attractive to pass on…Thanks Eric, you pointed me into the sweet spot I needed to be at—happy as a clam!

Universal audio has done a fantastic job of engineering these re-issues. I have used 1176s of different vintages, some black, one silver, and own an 1178. The track comes back very detailed vs the 1178 which adds a little fuzz, sometimes for the better, sometimes not so. While I don't have the other older 1176s to A/B I was immediately impressed with the new 1176s. They work well on all sources. They feel like brand new old friends.
