A Deeper Look At Ex Machina Soundworks
About Ex Machina Soundworks
Guided by the motto of “precision, not prestige”, Ex Machina Soundworks emphasizes engineering and performance over flashy marketing. From their flagship ARCTURUS midfield monitors to the versatile PULSAR MKII nearfields and the ultra-compact SELENE, every Ex Machina product is painstakingly crafted to deliver unparalleled accuracy without the need for additional reference monitors.
Composite coaxial drivers are standard on all Ex Machina monitors, providing point-source imaging for today’s immersive workflows. Advanced low-distortion subwoofers offer impressive bass extension with plenty of headroom for dynamic mixes, while cutting-edge DSP delivers extreme accuracy, and ultra-efficient amplification translates every watt into world-class sound, not heat. To top it all off, Ex Machina’s commitment to sustainability means your investment delivers maximum performance with minimal environmental impact. Explore the Ex Machina range below, get to know more about the people behind the brand, and let us help you find your dream monitors.

Born in Brooklyn
“We made the speakers we wanted for ourselves,” Ex Machina’s website states, “Because no one else did.” Frustrated by the compromises they were seeing from other manufacturers, a diverse group of engineers and audio professionals founded Ex Machina Soundworks in Brooklyn, New York, with no outside investment. That was back in 2016. Today, the company produces multiple loudspeaker and subwoofer models across a variety of form factors, use cases, and price points, but all designed with the same precision-first ethos. Still based in Brooklyn and still proudly independent, Ex Machina is a rare example of a small company making a big impact without compromising on its founding principles.

Performance Over Hype
We’ll say it again: “Precision. Not prestige.” While there are plenty of high-quality loudspeakers on the market, even the most well-known brands rely to some extent on name recognition, high-profile partnerships, and aggressive marketing campaigns. In contrast, Ex Machina prefers to let their products speak for themselves, putting their focus on designing the most accurate and efficient monitors possible rather than hyping themselves up. But the precision doesn’t end there. Before any product leaves their facilities, it goes through a rigorous quality control check, including acoustic measurements in an anechoic chamber to make sure that it meets their standards.

Stellar Sonics for Any Studio
Ex Machina’s products are all named after celestial bodies or physical phenomena, and their product range is as diverse as the solar system. TERRA is a three-way active monitor designed to keep your mixes grounded with reference-quality sound, and it integrates seamlessly with the optional GRAVITY passive subwoofer for Earth-shaking bass. SELENE and its companion subwoofer POSEIDON form a similar duo delivering point-source precision and full-range coverage in a compact cube for small studios and immersive arrays.
The three-way PULSAR MKII and GANYMEDE deliver Ex Machina’s signature accuracy in a traditional loudspeaker form factor, while the QUASAR MKII and ARCTURUS feature dual subwoofers in an axisymmetric layout for even more power without sacrificing imaging. For immersive studios, the Dolby Atmos-optimized TITAN system gives you four compact overhead or surround speakers bundled with a powerful rackmount amplifier and DSP engine. Whether you’re outfitting a home studio or a world-class post-production facility, there’s an Ex Machina product that fits your needs.

Made for the Immersive Age
Immersive audio demands complex multichannel speaker arrays with ultra-linear frequency response and pinpoint spatial imaging, and Ex Machina’s products excel in these applications. Their signature coaxial drivers ensure that all of the critical midrange and high-frequency content originates from a single point, so you don’t get any of the smearing or phase offset that traditional woofer-and-tweeter designs are prone to.
From state-of-the-art DSP chips to scientifically designed cabinets, every facet of Ex Machina monitors is calibrated to deliver the accuracy you need to mix confidently in immersive formats like Dolby Atmos. Use any of their full-range monitors as your mains and take advantage of the compact and lightweight models like SELENE and TITAN for overhead and wall mounting. Because they’re all designed for precision, you can trust Ex Machina monitors to help you create immersive mixes that translate to any listening system.

Sustainability
Merely producing top-quality monitors isn’t enough for Ex Machina. The brand is equally committed to minimizing the environmental impact of their products, so your investment is as good for the planet as it is for your studio. Instead of the usual medium-density fiberboard (MDF) made with harmful glues and formaldehyde, Ex Machina monitors are made of Valchromat®, an FSC-certified material bound with a special resin and colored with organic dyes. The cabinets are constructed so that less than 15% of each sheet is wasted, and they’re treated with Rubio Monocoat®, a plant-based finish that gives off none of the volatile organic compounds (VOC) found in most spray coatings.
Under the hood, ultra-efficient Hypex Ncore® amplifiers deliver the power these monitors need while producing less waste heat than similar Class A/B designs, especially when idle. To make the most of that power, Ex Machina uses lighter-than-average diaphragm materials which provide maximum output (93 dB per watt in the case of their coaxial drivers). Even their facilities are sustainably designed using renewable materials and high-insulation construction to minimize heating needs, and a commitment to 100% renewable power sources means Ex Machina monitors have some of the lowest environmental footprints in the industry.
