Chandler Limited TG2-500 500 Series Preamp

The classic sound of the EMI TG12428 preamp used in EMI / Abbey Road consoles in a 500 Series format
MFR# TG2-500

Product Description

Building upon the popularity of the Chandler's acclaimed TG2 Preamp/DI, the Chandler Limited TG2-500 delivers the classic sound of the EMI TG12428 preamp used in EMI / Abbey Road recording and mastering consoles in the late 60s and early 70s – in the 500 Series module form factor.

Using the identical TG2 circuit, transistors, and transformers, the TG2-500 delivers 10-60 dB of gain and uses a coarse gain control and a fine gain control as found on EMI consoles. The unit provides 300 and 1200 Ohm input impedance as on the TG2, which the Chandler's customers have come to value.

The Chandler TG2-500 delivers a frequency response identical to the TG2 and it has the same high frequency bump and mid forward tone that users enjoy with the TG2, along with the warmth-inducing distortion, which contributes to its sound. The end result is a creamy, smooth tone with a surprisingly open, clear top end. The sound, as explained by many users, has the "warmth and punch" of a Neve, but with a nicer, expanded top end.

Chandler Limited owner and chief product designer Wade Goeke commented on the company’s new TG2-500 preamp, “The TG2-500 is a product we’ve been asked about for a number of years. In the past, I always commented that I had not yet found the right way to engineer this unit in the 500 Series form factor. Now, I’m pleased to report that, after working on this challenge for quite some time and attempting a number of different methods in the process, I’ve made everything work to my satisfaction. I’m glad I was patient because I genuinely believe our users will be pleasantly surprised and very pleased with the results!”

Word on the Street

Very nice preamp one of the best I’ve had. I’ve been using as my primary preamp for most application over my Neve preamp. Which both are very nice, I chain the preamp with my Manley reference c and wow very little to none EQ needed!! :)

No regrets if you’re looking to get the Chandler TG2-500. Using it my home studio-Works exceptionally well with Brass and saxes- very easy to control dynamics and the tone that can be applied outstanding

I had a record coming up that needed to have that old school sound, the band said it was a combination of the Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Pink Floyd. I wanted to find something that would match the vibe of those old recordings. I hadnt been too familiar with Chandler products before looking into this preamp, but found out that they are authorized to make products used in Abbey Roads studios, which is where most of the clients heros recorded. I had an extra space in my 500 series rack, so I thought Id try out the TG2-500 before spending the money on something much bigger. The first track we recorded was an electric guitar solo, kind of in the Gilmore style but a little dirtier. I couldn't believe how quickly we dialed in a sound similar to those old recordings. I typically use the 300 impedance setting, seems to sound older to me, I drove the input to the preamp a little bit with the coarse gain, then trimmed it back just a touch with the fine gain trim. Once I backed it down, I was able to boost that overall level with the Output control to get a proper level in my DAW. Without any EQ or compression I was 100% closer to the tone I was looking for in the final mix than I had been able to achieve before with my old preamp and a bunch of plug-ins. This little preamp has some real character to it and has become a favorite to all my clients.

This was my first experience buying something from Vintage King (although I surf the "used" categories on the website frequently!), and, despite being on the other side of the world, I had absolutely no trouble and everything went very smoothly.
