Around The Shop: Telefunken ELA-M 251 Microphones
The Telefunken ELA-M 251 is one of the most storied large diaphragm condenser microphones in recording history. It came about after the fruitful relationship between Neumann and Telefunken dissolved, and AKG stepped in to help manufacture a new microphone for Telefunken. We recently had a number of Telefunken ELA-M 251s come through the Vintage King Tech Shop for servicing. Two of the microphones are incredibly close to being numbered sequentially (917 and 919), and since these mics were made in blocks of ten, that's an incredibly rare sight. Continue reading →

  4. Around The Shop: Neumann SM2 Stereo Microphone

Around The Shop: Neumann SM2 Stereo Microphone
While walking around the Vintage King Audio Tech Shop, we saw microphone tech Tim Johnson (lovingly referred to as "Timmo" around these parts), working on something pretty special. It's not every day that we get a Neumann SM2 in for work, so we thought we'd shed a little light on the history of this fantastic mic. Let's go back in time. The 1950s were revolutionary in terms of recording technology and Neumann was at the forefront of the industry. The brand set out to create the first stereo condenser microphone and did so with the SM2 in 1956. Here's an excerpt from the original Neumann SM2 brochure Continue reading →

The Flea 47 gets the details right by accurately replicating the most important components of the U47; the M7 capsule, the BV8 transformer and Telefunken's EF12 Tube. How close does it sound to the real thing? Continue on to find out. Continue reading →
  6. Buyer's Guide: Microphones

    Buyer's Guide: Microphones
Every acoustic sound source, be it a piano, violin, guitar, speaker cabinet, or the human voice, requires a microphone to capture that sound. That makes the microphone the first interface with the vibrating air and the first link in the audio chain. Like any endeavor, you want to have a solid foundation. The microphone is that foundation. Choose the right one and your life just got easier. Choose the wrong one and you’ll be fighting an uphill battle all the way through the signal path. And nobody wants that. Continue reading →

  8. First Listen: Neumann U67 Reissue

    First Listen: Neumann U67 Reissue
When it comes to top quality microphones, every engineer in the business knows and loves Neumann mics, especially the U67. That's why it was particularly exciting when the brand announced at Winter NAMM 2018 that they would be releasing a historically accurate U67 reissue, the first of its kind since the original was discontinued. What sets the U67 apart from any other microphone in the Neumann family is it’s ability to capture an insane amount of low end. The proximity effect of the U67 is more prominent than any other model Neumann offers and is a favorite to many engineers for capturing an intimate vocal performance. Continue reading →

The Legend Returns: Neumann Revives The U67
The legendary Neumann U67 is back! The German microphone manufacturer has created a historically accurate replica including a K67 capsule and EF86 tube. In fact, the new version of the U67 is so true to form that all of the microphone's parts can be exchanged with those from vintage versions of the mic. The reasons for reviving the Neuman U67 are obvious. Utilized on countless recordings, including David Ruffin on "My Girl," Paul McCartney on "Hey Jude" and Ian Gillan on "Highway Star," this microphone has been a staple since its introduction into the studio world. 10. A Pristine Pair Of Vintage Neumann U47s Arrive At The Vintage King Tech Shop

A Pristine Pair Of Vintage Neumann U47s Arrive At The Vintage King Tech Shop
NeumannU47B We've been extremely fortunate to handle some world-class microphones at the Vintage King Tech Shop, but none so far compare to these vintage Neumann U47s that recently came into our hands. The word "pristine" barely does any justice to describe these microphones, as they truly are in museum-like condition. The two sequentially numbered mics are from the mid-1950s and have absolutely blown away any other U47s we've seen from the same era. Continue reading →
