LIFT by Space Lab Systems is a motorized, modular speaker stand system that offers remote-controllable height adjustment and excellent acoustic isolation for professional studio applications. With two different Speaker Platform sizes to choose from, three Isolator options, and two Power Supply and Control Kits, you can easily build a LIFT system for pretty much any nearfield/midfield monitors on the market. Use this guide to find the right components to give your monitors the support and isolation they need to sound their best.

Brand Overview

The story of Space Lab Systems began when Alex Sterling of Precision Sound Studios contacted his friends, Tim Crossley — a studio designer and founder of Float Studio Design — and Matt Schaefer — renowned New York studio AV system designer — with an idea for a motorized speaker stand with built-in acoustic isolation. Seeing an opportunity to fill a niche in the pro audio market, the three formed Space Lab Systems to bring their revolutionary LIFT speaker stand system to market.

Though the company is still relatively new, they’ve already made quite a splash in the studio world thanks to rave reviews from the likes of Sound On Sound, TapeOp, and Sonic Scoop, and testimonials from engineering greats like Bob Clearmountain, Ryan Hewitt, and Joe Zook. Building on the momentum of their successful debut, Space Lab is currently in the process of expanding their product range with three new products: a yet-to-be-named larger speaker stand to support large midfield monitors, the Launchpad low-profile desktop isolator, and the Woof subwoofer isolator.

Product Overview

LIFT consists of three configurable components: the Speaker Platform size, the Isolators, and the Power Supply and Control Kit that controls the motorized column. Space Lab Systems currently offers two Speaker Platform Sizes depending on your speaker’s size, three Speaker Platform Isolator options depending on your speaker’s weight, and two Power Supply and Control Kits depending on how many stands you wish to power together.

LIFT’s Platform Sizes

LIFT’s Base Plate is built from a single X-shaped piece of solid steel with adjustable feet for uneven surfaces. A sturdy steel Lifting Column with telescoping sections houses the motor mechanism and connects the Base Plate to the Speaker Platform on top. The Speaker Platform also has a rubber Friction Pad to ensure your monitors sit safely on top.

LIFT’s Speaker Platforms come in both Small and Large sizes suitable for speakers with different footprints.

  • Small Platform: 7.9 x 11.8 inches (200 x 300 mm)
  • Large Platform: 11.8 x 15.8 inches (300 x 400 mm)

LIFT’s Isolators

The motorized stand might be the most visually impressive part of LIFT, but the Isolators that hold up your monitors are just as impressive. Thanks to the characteristics of SylomerTM, an elastic cellular polyurethane foam that makes up LIFT’s isolators, the Speaker Platform has an exceptionally low vibrational frequency of 8.8 Hz—well below the range of any studio monitors.

This means that when the system is properly loaded, it attenuates across the entire frequency spectrum. Due to the nature of physics, there’s no one-size-fits-all speaker isolator. That’s why Space Lab offers three different Isolators calibrated for optimal performance with speakers of various weight classes.

  • Light Isolators: 11-26.5 lbs (5-12 kg)
  • Medium Isolators: 26.5-44.1 lbs (12-20 kg)
  • Heavy Isolators: 44.1-90.4 lbs (20-41 kg)

LIFT’s Power Supply and Control Kits

The final components of the LIFT system are the Power Supply and Control Kits. These kits come with two primary components, the physical Power Supply that drives the motorized Lifting Columns, and the Wired Remote Controller that tells the stands what to do. The Wired Remote Controller provides synchronized height adjustments for up to three stands, including three programmable preset heights as well as buttons for manual adjustment. The Power Supplies come in two options: one that can power up to two stands in either a mono or stereo configuration, and one for powering up to three stands, typically in an LCR configuration.
