Since its debut in the mid-’90s, the Empirical Labs Distressor EL8 has become one of the most widely used compressors in modern recording. It’s the rare piece of gear that shows up everywhere, from major studios to home setups and even live rigs.

With eight unique compression curves, two distortion modes based on tube- and tape-style saturation, and modern features like fully-variable attack and release settings, a built-in high-pass filter, and a dedicated side-chain filter, the Distressor is ready for anything.

To demonstrate just how versatile the Distressor is, Vintage King’s Bryan Reilly put the EL8 through its paces on drums, bass, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and vocals. Using a variety of settings and its distinctive distortion modes, these clips show off the unit’s impressive range.

The Empirical Labs Distressor EL8 is a true “Swiss Army knife compressor.” Its design allows it to mimic the punch of an 1176, the smoothness of an LA-2A, or the saturated warmth of tape and tube gear.

This versatility comes from eight distinctive ratio algorithms, each with its own compression curve and release behavior, ranging from gentle, transparent leveling to the extreme “NUKE” setting for aggressive dynamic control. Select from 1:1 (pure harmonic enhancement) up to 10:1 (hard limiting), including iconic "All-Buttons-In"-style settings for aggressive peak taming.

Attack times span from an incredibly fast 50 microseconds to a more gradual 50 milliseconds, while release times range from 0.05 seconds to a leisurely 20 seconds, making it equally suited for fast, percussive transients and long, expressive decays. A sidechain high-pass filter helps prevent low-frequency pumping, while a midrange boost option allows you to hone in on vocal dynamics with precision.

Beyond its compression capabilities, the Distressor also offers two distinct harmonic coloration modes. Dist 2 introduces smooth, tube-style even harmonics for added warmth and depth, while Dist 3 brings in tape-like odd harmonics and subtle saturation artifacts for a more vintage, textured tone. Together, these options give the Distressor a unique ability to shape both the dynamics and tonal character of any source.

For this Hear The Gear session, Bryan Reilly put the Empirical Labs Distressor EL8 through its paces on a variety of sources, showcasing why this modern classic remains a staple in studios worldwide. You’ll hear it working on drums, bass, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and vocals.

Below, we’ll break down the settings used for each example so you can hear exactly how the Distressor responds in different real-world applications. All tracks were recorded through a BURL A/D converter with no EQ or compression on the way in, and the specific mics and preamps used for each track are listed below.

Drums

Bryan started with a straightforward 4:1 compression setting on the drum bus, using a moderate attack (4) and the fastest release (0) to keep the kit tight and punchy. The HP detector and DIST 3 mode helped smooth out the low end while adding subtle harmonic grit. For extra weight, he blended in a parallel track slammed with the NUKE ratio, fast attack, and long release.

Bass

On bass, Bryan went for a gentle 3:1 ratio with medium attack and release times, letting the initial transients cut through while keeping the low end solid and consistent. Using the Bell Bump detector and engaging HP + DIST 3 added warmth and harmonic richness without sacrificing clarity.

Guitars

For the first electric guitar track, Bryan dialed in a 6:1 ratio with a moderate attack and fast release, using HP detection and DIST 2 mode to add midrange focus and edge. This setting keeps the performance forward and aggressive, with a touch of harmonic bite.  On the second and third electric guitar tracks, he opted for a more natural 4:1 setting with no detector or audio mods engaged, letting the playing dynamics shine through with minimal coloration.  Finally, for acoustic guitar, Bryan chose a lighter 2:1 ratio with a slower attack and quick release to preserve the instrument’s natural transients.

The high-pass detector prevented low-frequency content from triggering unwanted compression, while the Dist 2 setting added the warm, tube-style harmonics that complement vocal performances.
