For decades, Paul Wolff has played a major role in shaping the sound of modern recording studios. From iconic consoles to must-have outboard gear, his designs are known for their musicality, reliability, and innovative workflow.
Now, he's partnered with visionary startup DCA to create Wolff Audio, a new brand that blends classic analog design with forward-thinking control and flexibility. In this buyer’s guide, we’ll take a closer look at Wolff Audio’s growing lineup, including the Console ST Series, 500 Series modules, ProPatch patch bays, and monitoring tools.
The Console ST is Wolff Audio's flagship recording and mixing console, designed from the ground up for modern hybrid workflows. This versatile desk bridges the gap between pure analog tracking and DAW-based mixing, giving you the best of both worlds in a flexible, modular package.
Whether you’re an analog purist or working with a DAW-based setup, Console ST makes it easy to move from recording to mixing without repatching or rethinking your setup. In DAW mode, the large fader controls playback levels from your DAW, while the smaller fader or knob handles tracking levels. When it’s time to mix, the console shifts into summing mode, where each channel can handle up to four inputs. That means a 24-channel console can manage up to 96 inputs during mixdown.
When you’re recording and mixing multiple tracks per day, flexibility is key. That’s why Console ST comes equipped with comprehensive routing options to quickly get the job done.
Each channel supports three summable inputs, three stereo mix buses, and eight sends, including two mono sends and one stereo send with assignable buses. The inline design splits each channel into two paths, giving you more control without adding complexity.
Insert points include a blend control, making parallel processing simple and fast. Key points in the signal path are available on DB25 connections, keeping everything accessible and studio-friendly.
For added versatility, Console ST features integrated 500 Series slots, allowing you to add your favorite outboard processors right into the desk. You can load Wolff Audio modules or third-party preamps, EQs, and compressors.
Best of all, the 500 Series buckets can be positioned anywhere within a custom console layout, or even remotely in a rack if that makes more sense for your workflow. All I/O from the 500 Series buckets is available on DB25 connectors, giving you the option to route signals internally through the console or patch them out to an external patch bay.
At the heart of the Console ST is the 802a input channel strip. Each strip offers two mono sends and one stereo send, which can be used for cue feeds, effects, or buses depending on your needs.
The insert section features a dedicated blend function that lets you mix wet and dry signals from the insert point directly on the channel strip, making it easy to dial in just the right amount of compression or EQ.
First in the signal chain is the T-Q, a Baxandall "tilting" equalizer that provides smooth, musical tone shaping. Above that sits a high-pass filter sweepable from 20 Hz to 1.5 kHz and a low-pass filter sweepable from 500 Hz to 20 kHz, giving you surgical control over the frequency spectrum on every channel.
Designed in collaboration with Sunset Sound, the Wolff Audio Tutti is a tribute to Tutti Camarata, the founder of Sunset Sound. This versatile 500 Series preamp is based on the original design installed in the iconic Studio 1 console, which was used on thousands of tracks across countless historic sessions.
Meticulously rebuilt by Paul Wolff and Tutti’s son, Paul Camarata, and featuring a custom transformer by the original designer, the Tutti delivers that coveted, warm, and musical Sunset Sound character in a versatile 500 Series module.
If you’re looking for something a little more transparent, check out the RefPre 500 Series preamp. Designed for exceptional accuracy and massive headroom, it handles everything from hot condenser mics to delicate ribbons with ease.
Its stepped rotary switch lets you dial in and recall settings quickly, making it perfect for consistent sessions. It’s especially kind to ribbon mics, featuring a dedicated circuit that adds an extra 10 dB of gain, auto-impedance adjustment, and a phantom power lockout for safety.
A perfect addition to the Console ST or any 500 Series rack, FREQ is a versatile 500 Series EQ built for both broad tone-shaping and precise problem-solving. Thanks to its proportional Q design, the bandwidth narrows as you boost or cut, so small adjustments stay wide and natural, while deeper moves become narrower for clean notching.
The high and low bands feature an additional Wide mode that changes the Q to a three-octave fixed filter, perfect for broad tonal shaping, while the two mid bands include a 1/3 octave button for surgical removal of problem frequencies.
ProPatch Series patch bays bring modern digital control to the classic analog patch bay design. Available in a variety of sizes, these units offer any-to-any routing and "straight wire" performance for any studio.
Using the intuitive "Wolff Hound" utility app, you can configure and save complex routing presets for instant recall over your network. Plus, the relays pass full 48V phantom power and switch instantly, eliminating the shorting issues of traditional bays.
MeMore is a fully analog personal headphone cue system that puts performers in complete control of their headphone mix. Designed for simplicity, MeMore features 12 input channels, including eight mono and two stereo pairs, so performers can quickly dial in their own personalized mix.
MeMore supports multiple cabling options, using standard DB25 connections or analog over CAT6 for flexible studio setups. For cleaner installs, the DSub connectors on the rear are mirrored on the bottom panel, making cable management easy on desks or mic stands.
If you’re looking to add more headphone mixes to your cue system, check out the Collaborator. With four individual high-definition headphone amps, each with its own level control for personalized monitoring, the Collaborator makes it easy to split headphone mixes for busy sessions.
Featuring a built-in HearMe foldback mic with dedicated gain and level control, the Collaborator lets you blend room sound into each headphone mix. Need more outputs? The signal from one Collaborator can be combined with other Collaborators using the TRS headphone level input, making it perfect for choirs, horn sections, or any session where multiple headphone feeds are needed.
