Vintage Neve 31102 Preamps/EQs

In the lineage of Neve's legendary preamps, the 31102 module holds a special place. Designed for the brand’s iconic 80 Series consoles, the 31102 helped define the sound of countless sessions in the 1970s, and remains a benchmark for Class A console tone today. So when a pair of vintage Neve 31102 preamp/EQ modules landed on the benches at the Vintage King Tech Shop, we knew we had to document the occasion.

80 Series Consoles Introduce 31102 Preamp/EQ

The Neve 31102 preamp/EQ was built for the brand’s legendary 8058, 8068, and 8088 consoles. These desks were among the first true inline monitoring consoles, giving engineers far more control during tracking and mixdown by integrating monitoring paths directly into each channel strip.

Unlike its famed 10-series predecessors, the 31102 was designed as part of an integrated system. Its iconic Marinair 10468 microphone input transformer and discrete, Class A BA283 amplifier stage were built to receive only mic-level signals. Line-level duties were handled by a separate companion module in the console, a clever design that optimized the signal path for the revolutionary in-line workflow.

Class A Signal Path

At its core, the 31102 is a fully discrete Class A microphone preamp, featuring transformer-coupled inputs and outputs, and the unmistakable Neve sound. Often compared to the iconic 1073, the 31102 shares much of that familiar DNA but adds flexibility that places it somewhere between the 1073 and the more complex 1081. The result is a preamp/EQ module that feels instantly familiar, yet capable of more nuanced tone shaping when needed.

The 31102 Equalizer Section

One of the defining features of the 31102 is its three-band EQ, paired with both high-pass and low-pass filters. This layout makes the module equally comfortable performing broad tonal shaping or precise filtering.

The EQ section includes:

  • High Shelf: Selectable at 10, 12, or 16 kHz
  • High-Pass Filter: 45, 70, 160, or 360 Hz
  • Low-Pass Filter: 8, 10, 14, or 18 kHz
  • Low Band: 35, 60, 110, or 220 Hz
  • High-Mid Band: 350 Hz, 700 Hz, 1.6 kHz, 3.2 kHz, 4.8 kHz, or 7.2 kHz

With the addition of the Hi-Q switch on the mid band, engineers can tighten the bandwidth for more precise shaping or leave it wide for smooth, musical adjustments. Combined with 70 dB of mic gain, phase reverse, and EQ bypass, the 31102 is versatile enough to tackle just about any session.

Restoration at the Vintage King Tech Shop

Bringing a vintage module like the 31102 back to life requires careful attention to detail. Our technicians thoroughly inspect and service each module, addressing aging components, verifying transformer health, and ensuring the Class A circuitry is operating within spec. Once restored and calibrated, these modules are ready to deliver decades more service, without losing the character that made them special in the first place.
