Every now and then, a piece of studio history comes through our doors that feels like holding a time machine—Neumann's U48 is one of those rare, remarkable microphones. Known as the sibling to the iconic U47, this rare microphone carries the same rich tonal characteristics that made its predecessor legendary, while introducing unique features of its own.

With only about 800 ever produced, the U48 has become a highly sought-after gem among audio engineers and collectors alike. Whether tracking vocals, drums, or used as a room mic, the U48 excels in delivering warmth, clarity, and musical presence in any recording.

Neumann U48 Condenser Microphone

The U48 was introduced in 1957 and remains one of the most important variants of the U47. The key difference between the two lies in the polar patterns: while the U47 offers cardioid and omni modes, the U48 delivers cardioid and figure-eight patterns.

This figure-eight capability allows for versatile applications in the studio, such as recording two vocalists at the same time on either side of the mic, a technique famously utilized by George Martin at Abbey Road Studios. The microphone's ability to switch between these polar patterns makes it ideal for capturing the depth and character of any performance, especially when recording vocals and harmonies in close proximity.

The mic’s figure-eight pattern is achieved through a clever adjustment of the tube’s polarization voltage, splitting the supply between both diaphragms. This design results in a unique sound signature that enhances proximity effects and delivers a beautifully smooth low-end response. Although the U48 experiences a slight reduction in output compared to the U47 due to its design, the mic’s sonic capabilities more than makeup for it, offering exceptional clarity and tonal depth.

Like its U47 sibling, the earliest versions of the U48 featured the same iconic KK47 capsule. However, Neumann quickly swapped them out for the then-new K49 capsules, which provided more consistent performance.

This particular mic was sent to the Vintage King Tech Shop due to a shorted capsule, which we replaced along with the power supply and cabling. In addition to replacing its internal components, Vintage King Audio Microphone Technician Tim "Timmo" Johnson put the finishing touches on the mic by filling in the iconic Neumann badge on the front.

Owning a Neumann U48 means having a piece of audio history. This mic has graced countless recordings and studios, offering the same unrivaled sound quality and versatility that have defined Neumann’s legacy for decades. Today, the U48 stands as a reminder of the precision engineering and innovation that shaped modern recording techniques. Whether you're a collector, an engineer, or simply a fan of vintage audio gear, the U48 is a once-in-a-lifetime find that continues to inspire and elevate recordings around the world.
