Born and raised in New Jersey, Stephen Handy fell in love with music at an early age when he picked up the French horn in grade school. Inspired by artists such as Tame Impala, Yussef Dayes, and Tom Misch, Stephen strives to create music that transports you to another world. "A lot of what I like about these artists are the sonic spaces they put you in. As someone who both creates and consumes music, there's so much to appreciate about them and the choices they make."
In college, Stephen discovered his passion for the recording arts and after graduating with a degree in sound recording, he began his career as an audio engineer, working in recording studios all across the country, including the renowned Blackbird Studios in Nashville. "My approach to music making is free flowing. Often I find myself making the best music when I can get in the room with some friends and capture that moment."
A firm believer that "less is more," Stephen is a pro at crafting deep soundscapes with lush sonic textures — whether he's tracking guitar on a small desktop interface or dialing in his trusty AMS RMX16 reverb in the studio.
Q & A
What is the most inspiring part of the recording process for you?
The most inspiring part of the recording process is seeing the end result. In my experience as an engineer, my favorite moments were seeing the artist's face fill with joy as they hear the finished product.
What record do you point to as an example of perfect music production? Why?
In terms of perfect production, I look towards Tame Impala. His emphasis on the quality of the sounds he records and produces are second to none in modern music. Not to mention how great the songwriting is. 'Currents' is a fantastic example of this.
What else are you interested in, besides music?
Besides music, I really enjoy skateboarding, photography, video games, sneakers and sports!
