Lisa LaFountaine may have a deep-seated love for the classic rock she was raised on by her parents, but she also has a taste for creating something completely organic in the studio.
"I love all things sound design," Lisa says. "My favorite thing to do is to take a video clip, strip the audio from it, run around my apartment and outside making noise with random things, and then manipulate all the found sounds into something usable to match the video. It's fun, creative and challenging."
Prior to Lisa's at-home sound design missions, the Long Island, New York native studied at the University of New Haven. Lisa graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor's Degree in Music and Sound Recording. While studying at UNH, she was selected for a Study Away Program at Blackbird Studio in Nashville, in addition to studying abroad in Tuscany, Italy.
Post-graduation would find Lisa making the cross-country trip to California to work as a sales representative in the pro audio industry. At the same time, she began working as a freelance engineer, providing clients with recording services, sound design, mixing for stereo and 5.1, music/podcasting editing, and other kinds of post-production work.
As an Audio Consultant at Vintage King, Lisa is looking forward to bringing her years of knowledge to both those new to the studio and engineers who have been doing it for years.
"For novice customers, I'm excited to help fill in the blanks of their desired set-up with cool gear and educate them about the items and how they fit into the signal flow," Lisa states. "For experienced customers, I can't wait to learn more about their needs and recommend gear that I know will elevate their workflow."
What is the most important piece of recording or production advice you've ever received?
If the vocalist is struggling to sing the song, adjust the key to compliment their range. The recording isn't going to get any better by trying to track strained vocals over and over!
What do you think the future holds for the world of the studio? From analog gear to plug-ins to tactile control over digital elements, what's next?
Immersive audio formats like Dolby Atmos have already crossed over from post-production into the music world. I think the future holds more of these immersive developments whether it's for music, film, video games, live concerts, or curated experiences like theme park rides and escape rooms. Digital is on the rise, but analog will always be a coveted technology that people will preserve.
Fave mic? Fave outboard gear? Fave plug-in?
I love the AKG 414 - XLS for its versatility. Also, I love a good parametric EQ, so I need to have a GML 8200. iZotope's RX Advanced is an essential tool that I would be lost without!
What are your hobbies outside of music?
I love watching football. I am a huge Minnesota Vikings fan. I love classic American muscle cars and own a 1979 Firebird. I love anything that involves being in or around the water like swimming, kayaking, boating or beaching.
