For Josh Frost, it all started with “La Bamba.” While traveling on a family road trip, young Josh happened upon a Ritchie Valens tape and found inspiration. Despite not knowing a lick of Spanish, the song led him to seek out ways to become more musical in his life.
In the years since, Josh's music tastes have further evolved and become more specific. “I love music with catchy melodies, creative timing, and intricate guitar parts," Josh says. "Stuff like Jimmy Eat World, Copeland, Underoath, Acceptance… The list could go on!”
Coming of age in his group, Search the City, Josh signed with storied punk label Tooth & Nail and began touring the country and recording in top-notch studios. When in the studio with Search The City, the singer became more and more engaged in the process of recording and learning about gear.
Early on Josh learned to always use subtractive EQ before boosting and to always start a mix with proper gain staging. What is his favorite part of the process, though? “There are certain parts I love about each aspect of the recording process," Josh states. "Ultimately, I love seeing a song come to life when it's nearly finished.”
When he's not knee-deep in gear or working at Vintage King, you can find Josh at Disney on Ice with his wife and two kids.
What is your favorite piece of gear? That’s tough because I love so many pieces, but the Retro Instruments 2A3 is at the top of that list. It's a Pultec style EQ. People say this all the time, but you just can’t make it sound bad and it has vibe for days!
What record do you point to as an example of perfect music production? Why? Underoath - Define the Great Line : I love everything about this record, from the tones to the production and the creativity.
What do you like best about working at Vintage King? Talking to like minded people about things that drives us. That, and all the gear I get to try!
I’m a self-proclaimed finicky and difficult client. I let Josh Frost know that up front when he approached me about working with me for my studio needs. Time and time again, Josh has been patient, informative, and extremely helpful in my gear buying adventures. My studio wouldn’t be what it is without him and I can’t imagine working with anyone else.

Josh has been an absolute pleasure to work with. He is personable, extremely knowledgeable and quick to respond. On top of this, it's obvious that his interest in my studio and its growth is genuine. Josh is a great person to partner with, and I'm excited to see how he continues to influence my studio.
