A life spent in the music industry for Chris Karn began with an inherited 4-track recorder and a love of classic guitar and the lute. His infatuation with both instruments led to studying them in school, but Karn's love of The Replacements and The Smiths won out and he began writing songs and working in the studio on more modern music.
Karn's commercial success with his original music is enough to make any artist envious, as he secured two record deals and scored placements in major movies and TV shows, including How I Met Your Mother, Scrubs and more. In addition to his own songwriting, Karn has also worked behind the console, earning a stellar reputation among legends like Chris Lord-Alge, Daniel Lanois, Joe Chiccarelli and John Shanks.
Working alongside these incredible studio veterans has enabled Chris to have a unique vision when it comes to creating music. His most treasured piece of studio advice comes from none other than Daniel Lanois (Bob Dylan/Neil Young). Lanois told Karn, "Turn off the Pro Tools Screen and listen to the music (don't look at it) because that is what the world will hear."
A surfer and self-professed "family guy," Chris is honored for the opportunity to be a part of the Vintage King team. He is especially grateful for the years of excellent service he's received as a Vintage King customer for nearly 20 years, and loves passing on that same quality help to others on their own quests for studio greatness.
Karn's favorite part of working at Vintage King? Helping turn any space into a warm, professional recording environment that inspires artists to create greatness. He believes that the person who enters the studio does so before you actually do physically, and stays well after you leave. "Keep that in mind when making your way in the world and all will be good!" Seems like you're on the right track, Chris.
