Born and raised in Alton, IL, just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, MO, Brett Kutter's journey into music started at home, where his parents filled the house with rock classics from the 70s and 80s, including bands like Boston, Def Leppard, and Metallica. Growing up during the rock boom of the 90s, he was captivated by bands like Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, and Sonic Youth, which left a lasting impact on his musical taste.
As a recording enthusiast, Brett's first foray into recording involved working on band demos with simple 4-track recorders and later using iPads and iPhones. This early exposure sparked his passion for the recording process, leading him to explore various studio environments and roles involved in music production.
In the studio, Brett's approach to making music is spontaneous and collaborative. He enjoys bringing ideas to the table and riffing with his collaborators, transforming those ideas into cohesive creations through a sometimes messy but rewarding process. Regarding perfect music production, Brett points to The Police's Greatest Hits - Abbey Road Remaster on vinyl, praising its loud, punchy, and warm mix and master, making it a true inspiration for music sessions.
When asked about the gear that changed how people work the most, Brett highlights the impact of DAWs, which revolutionized music production, making it more accessible and cost-effective. As for the most important production advice he received, Brett emphasizes the significance of demos and the value of live tracking, which has saved sessions and sanity.
Beyond music, Brett considers himself a mid-level nerd and auto enthusiast, with a special love for Japanese cars from the 90s. He also spends his leisure time immersed in playing FromSoftware games.
Joining Vintage King, Brett is excited about the company's commitment to representing excellent products in the music industry and the opportunity to work alongside great people.
Who are some of your favorite artists and why?
The Alchemist: His recent work with Boldy James and Freddie Gibbs really reignited my interest in
hiphop/rap in recent years. The world-building he does with his artists is absolutely brilliant.
Johnny Marr / Smiths: I especially love his guitar work throughout the Smith's era, but with time that's become just one part of his legend. Considering the 'indie rock' world without his touch on it is unthinkable.
What is an accomplishment in the recording industry that you're most proud of?
While this isn't an industry-recognized accomplishment by any stretch, I'm proud that my friends and
I were able to write, produce, and record a full-length album on our own.
What is your favorite piece of gear?
My Olympic White '65 American Vintage Jazzmaster, which was a gift from my Mother. For the nerds,
it's all stock outside of some Mastery hardware and a Spitfire mint guard.
