Kevin Schuck’s journey with music began after losing his father at a young age. Just a kid with a guitar and his Dad’s songbook, Kevin taught himself how to play guitar and discovered the healing power of music.
He first fell in love with recording while working as a studio musician. According to Kevin, “There’s nothing like getting into a room with other people and making something everyone is proud of. You know when everyone is laughing and smiling you have something great on your hands.”
Born and raised in Tucson, Arizona, Kevin moved to Nashville to pursue his music career, where he’s been working as a session musician and recording engineer ever since. His advice for recording and producing great music? “Have fun. You can always learn or master new skills but if you’re not enjoying what you’re doing it really shows.”
Kevin is a fan of the classics. His go-to signal chain for tracking guitar is an original 1965 Fender Princeton miked with a Shure SM57 and a Royer R-121. Inspired by amazing songwriters like Tom Petty, and heartfelt performances like those on Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors, Kevin is an expert at helping people dial in timeless tones.
What is the most inspiring part of the recording process, for you?
It’s the community aspect of it. There is nothing like getting into a room with other people and making something everyone is proud of. You know when everyone is laughing and smiling you have something great on your hands.
What record do you point to as an example of perfect music production? Why?
Fleetwood Mac, Rumors. It’s the humanness to everything. From how you can hear guitars fret out to how all the high end of the drums are gone because they went back over and over on the tape to re-record parts. The wobble in the vocals and even when the bass overly dragging in sections. You can really feel the emotion to the songs and that’s why they are truly timeless.
What else are you interested in, besides music?
I am super into being a husband and a father. It’s a joy I never knew I could have and has been one of my life’s greatest gifts!
