The Wunder Audio Cobalt Pre is the result of years of testing, development and enhancements made by Wunder Audio in Austin, TX with the PEQ1 and PEQ2. The inside of this discrete Class A build-quality module is pristine, with meticulous wiring and impeccable soldering. Top-of-the-line components are used at every junction, highlighted by Wunder's own custom wound transformers. The transformers are made using the same custom laminations of Nickel/Iron/Cobalt that were used in the original Zeppelin "Allotrope" modules; which inspired the original Wunder Audio PEQ1. The transformers are so beefy that they barely fit in the unit's case.
The Cobalt Pre has the same circuit, input transformer, and output transformer as the Wunder Audio PEQ2. All aspects of this design, from the metalwork to the components in the circuit, are made to the same exact standards as the PEQ2 but remade for the 500 series format.
In a studio where we have every flavor of all the classics available...API, Neve, Focusrite, Avalon, Chandler etc.. The Wunder Cobalt is easily and BY FAR the best sounding preamp i've ever used. It isn't flat and boring, but it isn't incredibly colored. It is very big sounding w/ prisitine clarity and a silky smooth top. It's as if you merged a Neve and API and then gave it another 20% fidelity. Insanely low noise floor, incredible head room and it saturates in a kind and musical way. I primarily use this mic pre for vocals and would never use anything else, however I've also used it for bass guitar, electric and acoustic guitars, percussion..there isn't anything it doesn't excel at. 10/10, this is my desert island pre.
The mid low sounds smooth on vocals. If you are looking for a Neve style preamp, cant go wrong with this unit.
