The Universal Audio 6176 Channel Strip has been presented. Many users who demand the power and flexibility of today's recording technology find themselves yearning for the warmth and tone of yesteryear's hand-built analog circuitry. Now with the release of the 6176, Universal Audio, for the first time, combines their highly acclaimed 610 tube microphone preamp with their legendary 1176LN compressor to create the ultimate single channel signal path for everything from vocals to vibraphones.
The 2-610 microphone and instrument preamplifier has received praise from many corners. Michael Cooper, in his review for Mix Magazine, called it "hands-down, the most dimensional mic preamp I've ever heard!" Peter Wade, engineer/producer who has worked with acts ranging from Wyclef Jean to Jennifer Lopez, said simply, "This box rocks." The 6176 mic preamp sections maintains the quality and character of the 2-610 while adding high-tension power regulation for improved bass response and a front-panel 15db pad switch.
As legendary engineer/producer Andy Johns put it, "The 1176LN is the workhorse compressor." The 1176LN may well be the most loved compressor in history. Its trademark lightning-quick attack and release times and the tone of its Class A output amplifier have enhanced countless recordings over the last thirty-five years. We've recreated the 1176LN for the compressor section of the 6176 with the same exacting, attention to detail and tradition we use on our 1176LN. The resulting character, heritage and tone simply cannot be found on other channel strip units

My first foray into hardware. Such a beautiful sound, but must be learned like an instrument. Can’t undo if you go too far. That being said the compressor seems to be able to do a lot more with reduction without totally destroying the sound. Using my ears I am sometimes surprised how much GR I am getting, but trying to back it off doesn’t sound as good. Anyway I love it and it makes everything sound like a song from the beginning.
This has been a total game changer in my studio. The preamp section of this channel strip is one of the smoothest on the market and simply has a vibe to it. Whether Im recording vocals, bass, electric guitars, brass instruments, drums, etc, the 6176 always seems to be a perfect fit. The selectable transformers have the ability to reshape the tone coming in, I really like how the 500 setting makes everything fatter and warmer, but the 2.0K setting can add some bite and attitude. The EQ is super simple and very musical, one click up on the 200 Hz band sounds good on just about everything, then a click or two on the 10 kHz band opens the sound right up. The 1176LN compressor is the magic ingredient. I always leave the preamp linked to the compressor, even if theres no compression happening, just running through it seems to add a little something special, I can also have a little more control on the output to my DAW by using the output control on the compressor. -3dB to -5dB of gain reduction on this compressor seems to make everything glue together much nicer.
The best gear advice always comes from those who use it the most. That's where you come in! Let the pro audio world hear your voice with a review of the Universal Audio 6176 Tube Channel Strip . Once you submit your review, please check your email and verify your address to have it posted.
