After the early success of the tube-based Model 108 mic preamp, Bill Putnam decided to take advantage of the cutting edge of the time (the early 60s) by using the newly-developed Field Effect Transistor, or FET. Using the FET as a basis, he developed the 1108 mic preamp; completely discrete and solid state. The 1108 was a single-stage preamp using both input and output transformers. The line amp and Class A output stage of the 1108 was in fact also used in revisions A through E of the benchmark 1176 compressor/ limiter. The modular design of the 1108 allowed it to be used in Putnam's early consoles, where the mic pres were separate and removable, (so that if one failed, it wouldn't bring a session to a halt). The simple and reliable design, as well as the great sound, insured a wide popularity for the 1108, and it was used on a large number of classic recordings from this era.
