The Dallas-Arbiter Fuzz Face is a true classic of ‘60s fuzz lore. Made famous by players like Jimi Hendrix, Cream-era Clapton and David Gilmour on Pink Floyd tracks like Shine On You Crazy Diamond. These big-hitters dug the original Fuzz Face for its thick, psychedelic sustain and all-out screaming fuzz tones.
However, anybody who has owned a vintage British car knows that quality control was not the English’s strong suit during the ‘60s and ‘70s, and Dallas-Arbiter was not immune from this phenomenon. Original Fuzz Faces were notoriously inconsistent in just about every area—tone, reliability, component quality, etc. Of course, the famous players we mentioned had the luxury of cherry picking the best pedals and then having them tweaked further by technicians like Roger Mayer, but who wants a vintage cast off, even if Jimi Hendrix rejected it?
Lucky for us, Throbak Electronics offers the Fuzz Haze, a recreation of the Germanium Dallas-Arbiter Fuzz Face developed with stringent quality control, solving the major drawback of the originals with critical component selection and testing, as well as those tweaks only the stars of the time could find.
Throbak’s Fuzz Haze features a reverse audio taper potentiometer providing an unparalleled range of fuzz adjustment when compared to the original units. They also thought many Fuzz Face clones sucked the circuit of bass response that made the original such a powerhouse when paired with a Stratocaster. Throbak avoided this unfortunate condition by adding an internal user-adjustable pre gain and bias trim, giving you full control over the fuzz character and crucial bass response. Lastly, Throbak uses socketed transistors so they can tune and tweak each individual pedal, assuring each Fuzz Haze sounds like it was cherry-picked as the best.
We think Throbak’s Fuzz Haze offers up the same thick screaming Fuzz that drew Hendrix to the original. We wear fringe jackets and play our Strats upside down almost every time we plug one in. You may not take it to the extremes we do, but we’re sure the Fuzz Haze will be your most stomped on boxes.
