In the Tegeler Audio Schwerkraftmaschine the signal passes through a total of three transformers and four triode tubes per channel. Why does this matter? Tubes, and especially triodes, add harmonic overtones to the signal that the human ear finds pleasing, while improving the perception of individual sounds.
The individual instruments are given additional presence through the tubes. Through the conversion of electricity into magnetic fields and back to electricity, the transformers and their non-linearities increase the density of the sound before it is compressed. The bass becomes cleaner and more defined. The high frequencies are pleasantly rounded.
Whether it is about softly compressing the sound, a more harder effect, or responding to complex situations... There is a program for everything.
Generating a digital control signal offers flexibility that simply cannot be found in analogue equipment. This makes it possible to emulate the behavior of any existing compressor.
When you need the Schwerkraftmaschine to work like an Optical Compressor, including the memory effect? But with the Attack and Release still being adjustable? It’s a piece of cake!
Or you need it soft like a Vari-Mu? Or preferably just like a VCA?
Tasks like this are simple for the Schwerkraftmaschine. Tegeler have created completely unique programs that have previously never existed in any compressor, which generates the control signal based on complex rules. They have created and optimized this equipment through countless listening sessions. Just choose the right program for the each song.
The side-chain filter determines which frequency range the compressor responds to. Prevent pumps using the low-cut filter. Add weight to the high or low frequencies using the pitch filter/tilt EQ.
The sidechain filter works separately to the built-in compression mode filters.
Every control is fitted with a servomotor which can set the pots into any position. You can make adjustments whenever you want – a slip clutch combined with software always gives your direct control the priority.
Do you need all these modern network based tools? No, not at all! The Schwerkraftmaschine can be completely controlled from the front panel, where it behaves like any other piece of hardware.
Connect the Schwerkraftmaschine to your network. It acquires the settings it needs automatically via DCHP. You can control the Schwerkraftmaschine from anywhere in the world – be that Sydney, L.A., or even Berlin.
Download the plug-in to your favorite DAW and control the Schwerkraftmaschine via the plug-in. The motorized pots follows every movement.
Or directly on the device itself. Both settings are synchronized.
When you save your song with the plug-in, the settings are automatically saved in the Schwerkraftmaschine, too. When you reload the song, all your settings are back. All the controls are exactly as they were before.

The vari tube compressor setting is out of this world incredible on this unit. This unit shines on the mix bus, in my opinion. Mixes feel "taller" (lows to highs) and wider immediately in varit tube compressor mode. I've used its opto compressor mode to tame wildly dynamic wind solos (sax, trpt, trbn) and it works well for that as well. I bought the SKM partially for its versatility, but I truly hardly ever use it for anything but its vari tube compressor mode on the mix bus. My acoustic mixes seem lacking without it.
I gave it 4 and not 5 because Tegeler still has some work to do on its accompanying plugin. Wes Audio's software worked immediately for me. This has not been the case with the Tegeler SKM software controller. To Tegeler's credit, they are trying to get the plugin to wok on my PC system, but so far, it's still buggy after six months or so. Even with the buggy software, the Tegeler lives on my mix bus.
Boom! Been bussing this beautiful blue baby bout 45 days. B+. Just kidding. A+ for sure! Gadzooks it’s good. We’re lucky to have loads of other comps here of various topologies (IGS, Dramastic, Elysia, Nail, Titan, etc) including vari-mu’s like Manley and Pendulum, and this Tegeler box definitely holds up, and in fact emulates several topologies extremely well. It has 11 modes, including diode bridge, and I must say that emulation is impressive. Who’da thunk? It doesn’t do everything tho. For *clean* FET I’ll reach for our Daking, but the Tegeler is assuming master buss duties well for most genres. The integrated plugin for recall is super handy as it recalls the modes as well. You can even change the meter’s look, radically, w 21 different graphics, (kinda cool) and can see it clearly from across the room. I’d describe it as somewhere between a Kush Tweaker or Distressor as far as how it can very effectively handle emulations, and a classic Vari-Mu legend, with a tad more girth and airy, open, width. The “Opti” mode for cutting vocals is superb, and having plugin recall for overdubs and revisions? Love it. I also appreciate Tegeler’s humble “we are not here to put other compressors out of business” statement. Who doesn't like a little humility? And props to Marc Daniel Nelson for hipping us to this box, cuz who has time to try everything? Oh, right, Scott Iulianelli and Bill Learned and Mike Carnarius and.....
The sound and build quality and capability that you get here for the money is just insane, and it looks wicked as well. This is a no-brainer if you are in need of a colorful, vari-mu style stereo mastering compressor that can mimic several other compression styles with perfect recall.
