The SSL VHD 500 preamp harnesses versatile VHD-based preamp technology from the flagship SSL Duality console to deliver a wide range of tonal options for recording engineers. Combining SuperAnalogue circuitry with SSL’s patented Variable Harmonic Drive (VHD) system, the SSL VHD 500 can dial in everything from crystalline clean records to aggressive, highly saturated tones.
The SSL VHD 500 preamp is a highly flexible preamp, well suited for any style of recording. In standard mode, the VHD 500 utilizes SuperAnalogue circuitry to deliver ultra-clean recordings. Engage the VHD circuit to generate rich harmonic distortion using an all-analog signal path for a rich, warm tone.
As you increase the input gain, the VHD system outputs more harmonics, which can be controlled using the Drive knob. Turn the knob to the left to create gentle valve-style warmth with a touch of transistor edge. Turn the knob to the right for trashy “transistor-esque” sound full of 3rd order harmonics. Or leave the knob somewhere in the middle for a blend of both and a world of sonic options in-between
The SSL VHD 500 preamp features three rotary controls for input gain, trim and Drive. The input gain controls range from +20 to +75 dB gain, while the trim knob can be used for adjustments up to +/-20 dB.
The VHD 500 also offers a selection of professional features. A ‘signal present’ LED makes it easy to tell when VHD 500 is receiving signal, saving you valuable time when troubleshooting. A switchable 15 Hz to 500 Hz LF Filter section allows you to fine-tune the low-end of any recording and remove unwanted rumble for cleaner, clearer recordings.
Ideal for a wide range of applications, the VHD 500 features a Hi-Z impedance switch for capturing direct guitar performances, a +48V phantom power button for use with condenser microphones, a PAD switch to enable line level processing, and a Phase Invert Switch for stereo recordings.

SSL tone in a 500 series pre! This is exactly what I was looking to add to the studio. We've already tracked vocals, guitars, kick and snare drums, and even some saxophone with this pre and everything sounds impressive. This was a great purchase and now a permanent staple of the studio workflow.
It is a super clean preamp when using it in clean mode. I regularly use an ssl aws 900 console and it’s actually cleaner than the console! The distortion mode is also a treat and offers tons of options! I love this preamp!!!
