The sE Electronics sE X1 D is a dedicated drum microphone, bringing the renowned quality of the sE X1 series to a microphone designed for use on kick drums and percussion.
The sE X1 D is the first microphone in the sE X1 series to be made specifically for instruments. It features a handcrafted, Titanium-sputtered capsule that is stiffer than the gold-sputtered capsules used on some of their other mics. This translates to a quicker transient response, which is important when recording instruments that create fast transients and attack like drums and percussion, as it enables the microphone to maintain clarity and deliver exceptional performance in accurately capturing the sound source.
The sE X1 D is also well suited to recording the hammer action of a piano and a bass, where the strings are often played with percussive techniques. The microphone offers a cardioid polar pattern with great off-axis rejection, which is essential when recording only one element of a drum kit without wanting the sound of other elements to bleed into the signal.
On board the sE X1 D is a -10dB pad and a bass cut. The mic is constructed with integrated shock protection in the form of a built-in rubber capsule mount, which helps to isolate the capsule from knocks and vibrations. The microphone is fitted with a side-mounted stand adapter for quick and easy attachment to a microphone stand, and it comes with a soft protective pouch.

This mic is a true hidden treasure. I heard demos of it on the SE website, and needed a new kick mic, so I went with this one. I loved the fact that SE makes all of their mics by hand, but is still able to keep the cost competitive. Once I got the mic, I was pleasantly surprised at how the low-end was accentuated in a very natural-sounding way. After trying it out on a kick drum, I then put it to the test on other sources. This mic became my go-to for acoustic guitar and male vocals. It really brings out the gutsy low-mids while still keeping the clarity and the upper octaves intact. It's a great utility mic for the cost. Every studio should have one.
